An ex-football player from the University of Miami who is suspected of killing a teammate outside a South Florida apartment complex in 2006 has been granted a bond of $850,000.
In the death of Bryan Pata, 35-year-old Rashaun Jones has been charged with second-degree murder. Almost 15 years after Pata’s passing, he was finally apprehended last year. On the third day of Jones’ Arthur Hearing, the judge allowed him to post bond. Whether or not he would post bond was unknown.
Jones’s defense team argued for a bond, pointing out that part of the witness testimony was known to police quickly after the killing, but the arrest wasn’t made until last year, despite the prosecutors’ insistence that he remain in jail without bond until his trial.
A witness who testified Monday said they heard a gunshot and were able to identify Jones from a police lineup. The detectives also described the caliber-based link between Jones and the murder weapon.
On Tuesday, authorities released information on the shooting death of 22-year-old Pata.

After his fourth and last season with the Hurricanes, Pata was widely projected to be a first-round choice in the 2007 NFL draught. Several shots were fired at the 6-foot-4, 280-pound defensive lineman outside his Kendall apartment on the night of November 7, 2006.
During their interviews, police were able to determine that Pata and Jones, who each spent three years with the Hurricanes, had argued before the shooting.
