About a year and a half after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was slain during the filming of Alec Baldwin’s Rust, the film’s producers have decided to move through with production. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the troubled western will resume filming this spring.
The famous Hollywood actor has had a rough month leading up to the announcement. Even as Baldwin apparently gets ready to star in and serve as executive producer on the Joel Souza-directed film, he also has to get ready for a slew of legal battles.
The actor was arrested on January 31 and charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter by New Mexico prosecutors. Initially, the allegations against Baldwin included a firearm enhancement, which would have resulted in a mandatory minimum term of five years in prison.
However, legal counsel successfully challenged the firearms upgrade on the grounds that it constitutes an “unconstitutional and elementary legal error.” Even though the gun charge was dismissed on February 20th, he still faces up to 18 months in prison if found guilty of the remaining charges.
The film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, is also being charged with similar offenses. On February 9, Hutchins’s family filed a second complaint in Los Angeles Superior Court against Baldwin and Rust Productions, this time alleging battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, carelessness and loss of consortium. Where will Production on Rust Pick back up?
Production at the Yellowstone Film Ranch in Montana has been confirmed to resume as of February 22. When Hutchins was killed halfway through filming, the cast and crew of Rust announced they would not return to New Mexico to finish the movie. Murder at Yellowstone City, The Old Way, and other performances debuted on the new set in June 2020.

Is Halyna Hutchins’s Family on board with Rust picking back up where it left off?
Matthew Hutchins, Hutchins’s spouse, is in favor of picking up where they left off. With Hutchins’ approval, production will move forward after a wrongful death case involving the incident was settled in October. In accordance with the terms of the agreement, he also takes on the role of executive producer. The late cinematographer’s family members are suing the production firm, Baldwin, Gutierrez-Reed and others, but they are not participating in the project.
When will Rust be Finished?
There is currently no scheduled launch for Rust. Although production is expected to pick back up this spring, it is unknown how the cases currently pending would affect that timeline.
