The Tobacco Road rivalry between North Carolina and Duke is one of the most heated in college basketball. The two teams are both powerhouses in the sport and, as of late, are in the early stages of new eras under relatively inexperienced coaches.
On Saturday night, the Tar Heels and Blue Devils will play the first of two times this season at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Both clubs are only two games behind Clemson in the ACC loss column, while now being seventh and sixth, respectively. Yet, the standings in the conference aren’t the only thing at stake in this battle.
As far as I can tell, this is the first time North Carolina and Duke have played each other in the NCAA tournament since the Tar Heels’ dramatic 81-77 win in the 2022 Final Four. That game marked the end of Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski’s tenure.
