Jimmy Warden admits that he saw a lot of horror films when he was far too young as a child growing up in Chicago. I got used to seeing people get their guts eaten or torn out of their bodies, stuff like that, he says with a wry chuckle over Zoom.

Warden’s sensibility is on full display in the action comedy “Cocaine Bear” directed by Elizabeth Banks and based on the true story of a black bear that died in 1985 after consuming a mountain of cocaine during a failed drug smuggling operation.

Warden wasn’t keen on writing about a bear dying of a cocaine overdose or about a drug trafficker who dropped dozens of bags of cocaine across the Appalachian Mountains before his parachute failed. What he ended up writing was my twisted fantasy of what I wish actually happened after the bear did all that cocaine.

Since Warden’s first job in Hollywood was as a PA on Lord and Miller’s live-action directorial debut “21 Jump Street,” he initially sent his script to Lord Miller, the production company founded by filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

To avoid this, Universal produced “Cocaine Bear” spending the bulk of its $35 million budget on Weta FX’s photorealistic CGI black bear addicted to cocaine. The independent thriller “Borderline” starring Warden’s wife Samara Weaving has already been filmed.

What is Warden’s Thought About the Title of the Movie “Cocaine Bear”?

As per the reports of Variety, Jimmy Warden thinks “Cocaine Bear” has a bright future. He said:

Yeah. Truth be told and perhaps I shouldn’t admit this, I never imagined that anyone would actually make this movie. When you’ve written a script, you’ll stop at nothing to have it read.  So, I always knew that Cocaine Bear would be the title of the film. I assume people are probably going to want to change the name.

Elizabeth Banks, Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Aditya Sood who are producing the film have all stated categorically that the title “Cocaine Bear” is essential to the production of the film. They have a lot more money than I do, that’s why.

If someone had wanted to make this movie, they could have called it whatever they liked and that would have been fine with me. And there are some things in there that I would have bet were going to get taken out if I were a betting man. They were constant advocates for those causes.
