Netflix’s The Society Ending Explained: What Happened in the Finale?

The Society Ending Explained

The Society, the newest YA show on Netflix, left a lot of loose ends at the end. Hopefully, this means that the teen thriller will be back for a second season.

But on the other hand, Santa Clarita Diet ended on a very open-ended note, but the show was canceled after just three seasons, so it’s dead and gone.

Cliffhangers alone aren’t enough to make sure a show is renewed, but fans have been making a lot of noise about The Society, which is about a group of teenagers who are left alone in their hometown after their parents and everyone else leave.

And a big part of that is because of the central mystery of the show and the way the first season ends. In episode ten, after a lot of arguing and plotting, Campbell, Harry, and Lexie were able to take control of the town from Allie.

She and Will were locked in a room together and handcuffed to a radiator. They were then brought out in front of all the other teens as the big news was given. Allie’s rule was over for the time being.

After the coup, there were a few happy moments in that episode, like when Becca and her newborn baby both lived. Another was when Grizz and his friends found land where they could grow food.

But before anyone could think about what was in store for the new town of New Ham and its people, the show’s creator, Christopher Keyser, took the audience back to West Ham. We hadn’t been back there since the first scene of the show.

Amanda, Allie’s mom, was reading a passage from Peter Pan to a group of West Ham’s youngest children. The story, which is usually pretty light-hearted, took on a dark meaning after what had happened –

“But Wendy had a better plan. Let’s all slip into our beds and be there when she comes in, just as if we had never been away.”

“And so when Mrs Darling went back to the night nursery, all the beds were occupied. She saw them, but she did not believe they were there.”

“You see, she saw them in their beds so often in her dreams that she thought this was just a dream, hanging around her still.”

Behind her, on the wall, was a plaque that said “We Remember Them” and had the names of all of the missing teens written on it. You may remember that it looks a lot like the “Citizens of New Ham” sign from earlier in the play.

All of the adults and children there were also wearing yellow ribbons, which are a universal sign of hope and are used for a number of different causes, such as remembering people who were held prisoner in war.

The event seemed to show that Gordie and Bean’s research, which they presented before Thanksgiving dinner, was right. Bean said –

“Ten days after what happened [the disappearance], there was a solar eclipse…[but] the next total solar eclipse in North America is not until 2024.”

Gordie then told them that Betelgeuse wasn’t where it was supposed to be and was off by a few degrees and that there were no moving objects between them and the moon, which meant that all of their satellites had disappeared.

In the end, he said that he thought the Earth they were on wasn’t their own. He added –

“It’s like a parallel universe, almost exactly like ours but not quite.”

So, Allie and her friends are stuck in the wrong universe and can’t seem to get back home right now, while their parents and other family members are still living in the right universe.

But it’s not clear if their parents have figured out what happened or if Gordie and Bean’s conclusions are for sure right.

But we do know that the strange smell that hung over the town at the start of the series—we still don’t know what caused it—is the key to solving the mystery.

Later in the show, it was revealed that a $1.5 million contract was made to get rid of the smell. The town refused to pay, and that’s when things started to go wrong.

We also know that the man who Harry’s mom and Sam’s dad were yelling at school at the start of the drama was one of the bus drivers who brought the teens to New Ham in the first place.

All of this points to the fact that the mysterious man made them go missing as a punishment for the town not paying up. When the bus left West Ham for the first time, it passed a sign that said “West Sham.”

But at this point, there are more questions than answers, so let’s hope that the powers that be decide to make a second season.
