The Ash Wednesday service in the Archdiocese of Manila will revert to the traditional practice of applying ash to the foreheads of the faithful. To prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic churches in the Philippines started using the practice of sprinkling ashes on worshippers’ heads in 2020.
Some churches resumed using the ashes on the forehead ritual in 2022 as COVID-19 cases began to fall. The archdiocese issued a circular on February 14, 2023 instructing parishes and other church communities under its jurisdiction to resume the ancient practice of sprinkling ashes on the foreheads of their members.
The archdiocese added that individuals should not apply their own ashes. Christians should receive ashes as a reminder that Christ through the Church issues a call to repentance and that it is through the Church’s ministry that individuals and communities are reconciled with God and one another.
According to the reports of Abs-Cbn, Caloocan Bishop and CBCP President Pablo Virgilio David instead said that the need for guidelines regarding the liturgical celebration would be left to the discretion of individual bishops. There are fewer restrictions on travel in many places you can remove your mask at the door and religious gatherings of all sizes are legal again.
