On February 19, 2023, ABC aired the premiere episode of Season 21 of the reality singing competition American Idol. Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie all came back as judges and Ryan Seacrest was back as host. The premiere of the 21st season of American Idol on Sunday was like getting 21 haymakers in the stomach.
At the beginning of the season, the three judges are presented with ominous gold boxes as they strut off different stages. These boxes would be more mysterious if they weren’t all inscribed with a large 21.
After that, we see some amazing performers for the first time and hear the judges’ feedback which culminates in Hostmaster General Seacrest saying, “Welcome home to the party of the century!” Kya Monee, a Season 19 duette with the late great Willie Spence returned to the competition and caused an emotional breakdown.
To justify her return to Idol, Monee’ sobbed as she described her love for Spence, the sorrow she felt at losing such a dear friend and the significance of continuing to pursue her dream in his memory. “It was extremely difficult for me to lose Willie,” Monee said.
