On Thursday(February 16, 2023), Vice President Joe Biden stated that there is no evidence to suggest that the three objects that were shot down in North American air space were connected to China’s spy balloon program.
In his first formal comments on the objects shot from the sky last weekend over Canada and the US, Biden said:
We don’t yet know exactly what these three objects were, but nothing right now suggests they were related to China’s spy balloon program or that they were surveillance vehicles from any other country.
The current assessment of the intelligence community is that these three objects were most likely balloons attached to private companies’ recreational or research institutions studying weather or conducting other scientific research.
Four days after the last known object was shot down, Vice President Biden gave a speech at the White House to address the situation following mounting pressure on the president to be more forthcoming about the situation and his decision-making as commander in chief.
Vice President Biden has stressed that there has been no evidence to suggest a sudden increase in the number of objects in the sky. Although the last three objects appear to be harmless, Vice President Biden has warned:
If any object presents a threat to the safety and security of the American people, I will take it down.

And until more information was gathered, officials were hesitant to have the president speak publicly about the objects. Three unidentified objects were shot down over the weekend. On Thursday (February 16, 2023), Biden explained why the US military didn’t immediately shoot down the Chinese balloon saying he gave the go-ahead “as soon as it was safe to do so”.
Due to its massive size, military officials warned against attempting to shoot it down from the ground. It was the size of several school buses and if it were shot down in a populated area, people would be in danger. Instead, we did extensive monitoring conducted detailed analyses of its capabilities and gained a deeper understanding of its operation.
Due to our foreknowledge of its route, we were able to secure particularly delicate areas from being gathered. So that civilians wouldn’t be in danger, we waited until it was over water so that we could retrieve major parts for further analysis.
