In recent years, animation studios have made concerted efforts to increase the representation of marginalized groups in their output. We did have ‘Mulan’ and ‘Lilo and Stitch’ when we were kids, but those were smaller-scale attempts that didn’t last. This was the case until the early 2010s when studios began making conscious decisions to include more marginalized groups in their films. Then, the entertaining action-adventure story “Rio” by Blue Sky Studios was a good move.
From “Ice Age” to “Ferdinand,” Carlos Saldanha has constantly provided animation classics that audiences have loved and appreciated. But with Rio, Saldanha brings the story closer to home by following the exploits of Blu, a captive blue macaw, in Rio de Janeiro. So it’s no surprise that the film Rio, about a sweet romance between two endangered birds, is also a colorful ode to Brazil.
The fact that ‘Rio’ takes up a genuine cause—the plight of the blue macaw parrot, which had been in danger for a long time and finally went extinct in 2016—makes it stand out among other films. It may not have been Saldanha’s objective, but the franchise will forever bring attention to these stunning creatures.
When Can We Expect the Release of Rio 3?
We know there isn’t presently work on a sequel because there have been no rumors of one for years. However, given Saldanha’s track record with sequels and his stated desire to direct “Rio 3,” its release is virtually guaranteed in the near future. Since Saldanha was last seen in 2017 filming ‘Ferdinand,’ we may expect to hear news about his forthcoming projects soon.

This film is a continuation of the 2011 original Rio and the 2014 sequel Rio 2, directed by Carlos Saldanha and written by Jenny Bicks and Yoni Brenner. Walt Disney Pictures plans to release the picture on March 17, 2023.

What will be the Expected Storyline of “Rio 3”?
Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) is a young Brazilian who is smuggled out of the country and taken up by a young girl named Linda, who raises him for many years. Their lives are turned upside down, however, when they receive an invitation to Rio from ornithologist Tulio. Blu is the last male of his species and must mate with Jewel (Anne Hathaway), the last female blue macaw, to prevent the extinction of their species. The two birds are smuggled into Brazil once again, and this time things take a comical and exciting turn.
In the first part, Jewel and her mate are busy raising their young in the forest; in the second, they embark on a trip to discover other blue macaws in the Amazon, which turn out to be Jewel’s final family. At the conclusion of the sequel, the family has made the decision to remain in Amazon, only visiting Rio during the summers.

Without any confirmed details, the plot of “Rio 3” can only be the subject of conjecture. The third act will mostly open with the family and the rest of the flock settling into their new home in the Amazon. Since Rio de Janeiro is in the title, we can assume that the family’s summer vacation there will play a role in the plot.
