When was Michigan State University Founded?
The Agricultural College of the State of Michigan was founded in 1855, the first of its kind in the United States, preceding the Agricultural College of Pennsylvania founded in 1855 and renamed in 1862, the Maryland Agricultural College and the University of Wisconsin.
It was inspired by the rise of scientific agriculture in Europe in the first half of the nineteenth century and the desire for formal agricultural education at the college level by forward-thinking agriculturalists in Michigan.
Public debates about the advantages of establishing an agricultural college for Michigan’s farmers and economy were spearheaded by the influential agricultural publication, The Michigan Farmer and the Michigan State Agricultural Society.
