Italian Winter Sports Federation released a statement on Wednesday, February 8 confirming the death of Elena Fanchini, an alpine skier who competed in three Winter Olympics. Fanchini was 37 years old.
Having last participated in December 2017, Fanchini opted to forego the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, in order to receive treatment for cancer. She was given the go-light to resume training over a year later, but injuries plagued the Italian and she and her sister Nadia have both announced their retirement as of 2020.
The Lovere native won silver downhill at the 2005 World Championships on home soil and went on to win two World Cup titles (in 2005 and 2015). Her death dampened the spirits of her former teammates at the Italian camp in Meribel, France, where Federica Brignone and Marta Bassino had just won world crowns on Monday and Wednesday, respectively.
A few weeks ago, Sofia Goggia, whose condition had worsened in recent months, dedicated her victory in Cortina d’Ampezzo to Fanchini.
