In reality, the final score conceals a terrible effort by the UNC basketball team on Tuesday night in Wake Forest. There’s just no sugarcoating it: the University of North Carolina men’s basketball team looked terrible against Wake Forest, especially in the first half.
The Tar Heels didn’t seem happy to be in Winston-Salem after losing their third straight game. The Tar Heels started slowly, allowing the Demon Deacons to shoot 51.4 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes of the game.
No Tar Heel scored more than two points in the first half, while Armando Bacot scored more than anybody else combined for his side. Both Caleb Love and RJ Davis struggled from behind the arc before taking a breather in the locker room.
Although they were behind by their largest halftime deficit of the season, the Tar Heels picked it up in the second half and outscored the Demon Deacons 60-45. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to help the Tar Heels catch up to the rest of the pack.
The team got better once Hubert Davis decided to shuffle things about, especially when he started putting in guys like Seth Trimble and Tyler Nickel. Nonetheless, the performance was such that it’s clear this team is more of a bubble squad than a legitimate NCAA Tournament contender.
They looked completely uninterested in playing basketball, as evidenced by Leaky Black’s jogging on a fast break (which resulted in two missed free throws) and Caleb Love and RJ Davis’s play as if they were the only players on the court.
It appears that there is no communication happening on defense and that there is a lot of solitary basketball being played. The Tar Heels don’t make an effort to get Armando Bacot in the post when he’s on a scoring tear, instead using him mostly as a screener from beyond the arc.

There appears to be a problem with this squad. It’s mind-boggling to see this squad struggle as much as they have, especially on Tuesday night. This might be due to player unhappiness or a lack of accountability on the part of the coaching staff. In a game that was a virtual must-win for both teams, the Tar Heels failed to show up, revealing where they now stand in the season.
There’s a sense of pounding a dead horse, but following the show on Tuesday, the annoyance is reaching new heights. The Tar Heels have a relatively easy schedule thus far, but things get rougher in a short period of time when they face Clemson and Miami in the span of three days.
This upcoming week of basketball might be very turbulent for the University of North Carolina.
