A White House official has confirmed that Labor Secretary Marty Walsh will serve as President Biden’s survivor for the State of the Union speech.
Walsh, the current Labor Secretary, is 11th in the line of succession to the presidency. An informed source told The Hill on Tuesday that Walsh will be leaving his position in the Biden administration to become the next executive director of the NHLPA. If he does quit, he will be the first Senate-confirmed Cabinet official in the line of succession to quit the White House since Biden entered office.
A member of the president’s cabinet is traditionally identified as the “designated survivor,” and they are expected to remain in a secure location throughout the State of the Union speech in the event of a catastrophic event occurring at the Capitol. Harris, the Vice President, and other members of the Cabinet will be listening in.
Walsh, as Labor Secretary under Biden, was instrumental in the Vice President’s efforts to keep his promise to be the most pro-union president in history by maintaining regular contact with striking union members.
Officials believed a strike by train workers and their unions would have been disastrous for the U.S. economy and supply chain, but Walsh played a pivotal role in discussions to prevent a walkout. After early difficulties in reaching an agreement, Congress voted to impose a contract in order to prevent a strike.
45 minutes before the commencement of the address Interior Secretary Deb Haaland posted a photo of herself and her fellow Cabinet members to Twitter but Walsh was noticeably absent.

It is undeniable how far we’ve come in the previous two years as a team. My anticipation for tonight’s State of the Union address from @POTUS continues to grow. “#SOTU,” Halaand tagged the tweet. The Interior Secretary also posted a photo of the Cabinet before the previous State of the Union address.
In 2022, Gina Raimondo, the Secretary of Commerce, was the president’s designated survivor for the State of the Union speech. The Commerce Secretary is Tenth in the Line of Succession to the Presidency.
