Approximately 52,914 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) sausage products manufactured by Daniele International LLC in Mapleville, Rhode Island are being recalled because they may be tainted with Listeria monocytogenes. The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture announced today.
Daniele International LLC produces an array of meat products including salami, prosciutto and sausages. According to the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture, the products may be adulterated with listeria monocytogenes making them potentially dangerous to consume due to the risk of listeriosis.
The infection caused by listeria is potentially fatal and requires antibiotics for treatment. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approximately 260 people per year die from listeriosis after contracting the disease.
What are the Diseases Caused by Listeriosis?
After spreading from the digestive tract to the rest of the body, listeriosis causes a wide range of symptoms, including fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, diarrhea, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions. Listeriosis is dangerous during pregnancy because it can cause miscarriages or stillbirths and it can infect newborns.
While the elderly, the immunocompromised and pregnant women and their infants are more likely to fall ill after consuming tainted food or drink contaminated with listeria anyone can become ill from consuming infected products.

What is the Establishment No. of Affected Products?
Mapleville, RI-based Daniele International LLC distributes to stores across the country. The recall involves about 52,914 pounds of RTE sausage products. The items were packaged and sent out for distribution between December 23, 2022 and January 17, 2023 with production occurring between May 23 and November 25 of the previous year.
Products affected by the recall all have the establishment number “EST. 54” inside the USDA mark of inspection. Users are urged to either get rid of the products or return them to the store they bought them from.
During a routine facility inspection FSIS found evidence of possible product contamination due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes on surfaces that had been in contact with the food. However, if you eat something that may have made you sick with listeriosis, you should see a doctor right away.
Those in higher-risk groups who experience flu-like symptoms within two months of eating recalled products should also see a doctor and tell them about the recall, as stated by FSIS. In June of 2022, an outbreak of listeria sickened 23 people in 10 states.
At the time, investigators were at a loss to determine the origin of the outbreak beyond the assumption that it began in Florida. The following month, a couple from Massachusetts filed a lawsuit against a Florida ice cream manufacturer claiming that the pregnant woman’s miscarriage was caused by listeria-tainted treats eaten by the family during their vacation.
A listeria outbreak in 13 states was linked to tainted Dole packaged salads earlier that same year, resulting in the deaths of two more people. Keep up with us on our official Twitter page to read the most recent updates as soon as they become available, as well as other breaking news as it happens.
