Woman Killed Her Husband in Florida Hospital

On Saturday, a woman is said to have shot and killed her husband, who was dying in a Florida hospital room. Police said the couple had planned this tragic and unfortunate event. Police said that the woman gave up after hours of talking with them.

Chief Jakari Young said that officers from the Daytona Beach Police Department responded to a shooting at AdventHealth Daytona Beach at 11:35 a.m. local time. Jerry Gilland, who was 77 years old was thought to have been shot in the head.

Police said they talked with his 76-year-old wife in the hospital room, where she had locked herself up for several hours before she gave herself up around 3 p.m. local time. Young said that the couple planned to shoot each other about three weeks ago, in case the husband took a turn for the worse.

“It’s a sad and terrible thing that happened”. It just goes to show that none of us are safe from life’s ups and downs. The plan may have started out as a murder-suicide but the wife, whom police identified as Ellen Gilland, decided she couldn’t do it, said Young.

He said, “It looks like the plan was for him to do it, but he didn’t have the strength so she did it for him.” Police said that after the shooting, the staff and other patients in the long-term acute care facility were moved out of the area.

No one else was hurt and police said that the woman was not seen as a threat to staff or patients. The man was the only person in the room. Young was impressed with the hostage negotiators who were able to talk to the wife for hours while she held the gun.

Young said that officers used a flash bang to get the woman’s attention so they could enter the room and take her into custody. Young says that Ellen Gilland could be charged with first-degree murder. He called it a tough situation.

“She was already sad because her husband was sick to the point of death and she knew the end was near,” Young said. The chief said, “Unfortunately, we see this a lot, especially around the holidays”. The only advice I could give is to try their best to get help.

AdventHealth Daytona said in a statement, “We are devastated by the tragedy that happened at our Daytona Beach campus today and our prayers are with those affected. We’re thankful that the Daytona Beach Police Department helps keep our patients, staff and visitors safe.”
