When did She Decide To Act in Movies?

When Shelley met the artist Bernard Sampson in 1970, she knew she had found her future husband. In the same year, she and Bernard gave a party where legendary filmmaker Robert Altman, who was in Texas filming “Brewster McCloud,” was among the guests; several members of the cast and crew were also present and they were all impressed by Duvall’s outgoing and charismatic nature. They approached her about being in the film. The opportunity to perform was too good to pass up, so she booked a flight out of Texas and headed for Hollywood. She played the lead character’s love interest in the film.

After “McCabe & Mrs. Miller” (1971) and “Thieves Like Us” (1974), Altman cast Duvall in both films. In 1975, she was a member of the cast of “Nashville,” an ensemble comedy directed by Robert Altman. She then starred in two more Altman-directed pictures the following year, “Buffalo Bill and the Indians” and “Bernice Bobs Her Hair.” She was so well-liked that she was invited to host “Saturday Night Live” and make an appearance in five different sketches.
