The planned biopic film “Michael,” based on the life of Michael Jackson will be directed by Antoine Fuqua and distributed globally by Lionsgate.

Graham King won an Oscar for producing 2006’s “The Departed” and was nominated four times for producing “The Aviator,” “Hugo,” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.  The production of the film is scheduled to begin principal photography in 2023.

John Logan, who wrote “Skyfall,” is credited with penning “Michael,” which promises an in-depth look into the life of the Grammy winner and future King of Pop. The film will cover Michael’s whole life, from his childhood to the memorable performances that propelled him to superstardom. Three of Logan’s films—”Gladiator” (2000), “The Aviator,” and “Hugo”—have been nominated for Academy Awards.

We consider it a great fortune that Antoine a talented and insightful director has selected Michael as his next project. “His unique narrative abilities and dedication to his craft will create Michael a film that audiences will never forget,” said Joe Drake, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

“The first films of my career were music videos, and I still feel that combining film and music are a deep part of who I am,” said Fuqua. “For me, there is no artist with the power, the charisma, and the sheer musical genius of Michael Jackson. I was influenced to make music videos by watching his work – the first Black artist to play in heavy rotation on MTV. His music and those images are part of my worldview, and the chance to tell his story on the screen alongside his music was irresistible.”
