A lady and her two children were found dead from hypothermia over the weekend in Michigan, the county sheriff said Monday. The mother had suffered a “mental health crisis.”Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said during a press conference on Monday that Monica Cannady, “believed someone was attempting to kill her and that everybody was in on it” before she and her children were killed.

On Sunday, authorities located the woman and her two sons, ages nine and three, in a rural region of Pontiac, about 20 miles northwest of Detroit. It was reported that Bouchard said the death was due to hypothermia.

A 10-year-old girl was also discovered by authorities and sent to a nearby hospital; Bouchard reported on Monday that the kid’s status was stable. Bouchard claimed that a young girl had knocked on his door and told him that her “family was dead in a field.”

Bouchard stated that before Cannady left with the kids, family members tried to help, but she declined their assistance. Cannady ordered her kids to lie down and sleep as soon as they entered the forested field.

Even though they had a house less than a mile from where they were discovered, investigators say the family could have been out in the cold for at least three days, as reported.

Sherriff Bouchard added, “Over the course of a few days, we actually had been getting calls about a mom and kids not clothed adequately for the weather.” “Sheriff’s deputies would check the neighborhood and come up empty.”

At a press conference on Monday, Bouchard called for increased funding for mental health services and said “so much more” could be done in terms of both crisis response and long-term solutions.

Charles Witherspoon, a resident of the area, told CBS Detroit that he and his neighbors had seen the family. Cannady, according to Witherspoon, begged a neighbor for food when she was hungry, but the woman denied knowing them because they had been sleeping on the porch.
