Michael James Flatley is from Ireland and immigrated to the United States in 1947. He won five times by technical knockout. Flatley has stated that he debated quitting dancing several times throughout his life including in the early 1980s but ultimately remained a professional dancer. Over time, he decided to give back to the Golden Gloves by making a charitable contribution.

At a ceremony in Cork’s City Hall in 2007 Flatley was awarded the freedom of the city. He was honored with the Freedom of the Borough of Sligo in a ceremony held at Sligo City Hall in 2008. And in 2008, Flatley received the Entertainer of the Decade Award from the Variety Club of Ireland.
He entered the Irish America Hall of Fame in the same year the magazine was founded. At the Park Lane, London ceremony for The Irish Post Awards on October 24, 2013, Flatley was honored for his lifetime of work. New York City’s 42nd Street was renamed “Flatley Way” in 2015 in honor of the musician.
This recognition occurred around the time his new show Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games opened at the Lyric Theatre. Michael won the award for Best Actor for his performance in Blackbird at the Monaco Streaming Film Festival in July 2021.

Flatley has dabbled in a number of professions since leaving high school. Flatley went on tour with Green Fields of America in 1978 and 1979. His request to become a permanent member of The Chieftains which he made during his 1980s tour with the group, was denied.
The president of Ireland, Mary Robinson and the producers of the dance show he was featured in saw Flatley and asked him to choreograph an intermission show for the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest. The contest was held in Ireland and he gave a 7-minute performance titled Riverdance during the intermission.
