Finally, Netflix has decided to bring back Wednesday Season 2. The popular mystery series has been the subject of much debate regarding its future but the streaming service has now confirmed that it will return for a second season.
“It’s been fantastic to produce a show that has connected with people throughout the world,” said showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar in a joint statement. Very excited to continue the arduous road that is Wednesday into its second season. There’s nothing we want more than to dive headfirst into the weird and scary world of Nevermore for a new season. To be sure, check that Wednesday hasn’t already drained the pool.
Since its premiere on Netflix on November 23rd, the first season starring Jenna Ortega has been the streaming service’s third most popular original series ever, after Stranger Things season 4 and Squid Game. In addition, twice during its run, the show set a new high for weekly English-language TV viewership.
Fans were understandably worried during the lengthy renewal process, and there were even baseless reports that the show might be transferred to Amazon’s Prime Video (after all, Amazon paid $8.5 billion for the rights to air the show’s content last year, which MGM produced). Wednesday was one of many potential Amazon original series that was ultimately rejected. In addition, the producers are considering potential spin-off concepts.

Gough had previously hinted at season two in an interview with THR, saying, We want to sort of explore and sort of complicate all of those connections going forward. With the school closed after they left, we have a lot more room to play with in season two, and I believe that’s something we’re all looking forward to. To us the show is also about the bond between Wednesday and Enid (Emma Myers).
It’s been rewarding to see that they’ve struck a chord with viewers. We’re curious to see what it’s going to be like now that Wednesday has taken the plunge into the world of friendship. Like, she gave me a big hug. That must have been her season-long defining moment. Basically, that’s how it works now. Morticia’s (Catherine Zeta-Jones) newfound knowledge of the power has given her a sense of how her mother-daughter relationship with Wednesday will develop, which is another interesting plot point. What direction will their friendship take?”
After directing the first four episodes of the first season, producer-director Tim Burton has neglected to comment on several important follow-up topics, such as how active he will be with season two.
The novel Wednesday is described as a “sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting the years of Wednesday Addams’ student career at Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the murder mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago”.
According to Netflix, the cast’s response video to Ortega’s jaw-dropping dance performance has racked up 80 million views on Tiktok and Wednesday merchandise has been selling well at Hot Topic and Cakeworthy.
