Night Court Release Date: The court has resumed hearings. NBC has ordered a revival of the venerable sitcom Night Court, and it will air early in 2019. The original series, which made its debut in 1984, was based on Judge Harry Stone (Harry Anderson), who oversaw a Manhattan courthouse’s night shift.
Stone, who was the bench’s youngest judge at the time, frequently approached his cases differently than the more experienced judges. Along with Charles Robinson as Mac Robinson, John Larroquette played prosecutor Dan Fielding, Markie Post played public defense Christine Sullivan, and Richard Moll played bailiff Bull Shannon.
Night Court, which was popular in the 1980s and the early 1990s, aired for nine seasons on NBC and received numerous nominations for Emmy and Golden Globe Awards during that time. Night Court is scheduled to debut on NBC on January 17, 2023. It will air at 8 p.m. as part of NBC’s Tuesday comedy block, immediately after American Auto. NBC’s “Must-See TV” Thursday night comedy block featured several seasons of the original along with popular sitcoms like Cheers and Family Ties.
Some of the greatest comedic successes of all time, including Seinfeld, Friends, Cheers, 30 Rock, and The Office, were later broadcast on that same Thursday block.
Night Court The Plot
As previously indicated, the first series focused on the employees of a New York City courthouse who worked the night shift. Harry Stone, a young, inexperienced judge, had to persuade the court’s fellow skeptics of his abilities. Episodes frequently featured strange and eccentric small-time offenders making arguments before Judge Stone.
Later episodes deviated more towards fantasy and the bizarre after being initially founded in realism. These included the episode in which Wile E. Coyote was a defendant and the series finale, in which the character Bull was kidnapped by aliens from Jupiter. There isn’t much information available about the plot right now, but we do have a logline of what to anticipate in Night Court:
“Unapologetically optimistic judge Abby Stone, the daughter of the late Harry Stone, follows in her father’s footsteps as she presides over the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court and tries to bring order to its crew of oddballs and cynics, most notably former night court prosecutor Dan Fielding.”
According to the logline, the resurrection would presumably try to follow the lead set by the original as closely as possible, and Abby Stone will likely share her late father’s excitement for the unusual night shift. As the debut draws near, further teasers and trailers with more narrative details will probably be released.
Night Court The Cast
Harry Anderson, who played Harry Stone, was the star of the original cast. However, Anderson passed away in 2018 after a stroke, prompting the addition of a new main character. Enter Melissa Rauch, who plays Harry Stone’s daughter Abby on The Big Bang Theory. Along with her husband, Dan Rubin, and her husband, Winston Rauch, Rauch also acts as executive producer.
We know at least one former cast member from the first film returning: John Larroquette plays Dan Fielding. Even more than the central Anderson, the sleazy, narcissistic Fielding became a breakout star with viewers of the original. Although Larroquette is the only old face who has returned, may there be other familiar faces as well?
Richard Moll is one of the few surviving cast members from the original primary cast after the deaths of Markie Post and Charles Robinson in 2021. Despite not being confirmed to return, Bull Shannon may materialize and reveal what transpired after he appeared to travel to Jupiter in the first finale.
Several new cast members will join Rauch and Larroquette. Olivia, the prosecutor, is portrayed by English actor India de Beaufort, who has appeared in Firefly Lane and One Day at a Time, among other television series. Donna “Gurgs” Gurganous, the court’s new bailiff, will be portrayed by Lauretta, who has appeared in guest roles on 30 Rock and Law & Order shows.
Donna is overly protective of her judicial colleagues, serious, and committed to her job. According to reports, she also lives in a small flat with many big dogs. Kapil Talwalkar, who starred in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, completes the new cast as court clerk Neil, whose responsibility is maintaining order in the court. That became more challenging when a new, youthful judge was appointed.

Was Night Court a Spin-off of Cheers?
Many people mistake Night Court for a spin-off of the iconic NBC comedy Cheers due to their critical praise and popularity at the same time of release. Night Court, however, is an original series that debuted on NBC during its initial run rather than a spin-off.
Who is in the Remake of Night Court?
The night shift team in the next Night Court series will be made entirely of fresh actors, with Rauch serving as Abby’s mentor. Melissa Rauch, John Larroquette, India de Beaufort, Kapil Talwalkar, and Lauretta are also part of the cast.
Is Richard Moll in the New Night Court?
The character of Nostradamus “Bull” Shannon, played by Richard Moll, captured the hearts of many viewers of the original Night Court.
