Who is Pele?
Pele, raised in poverty in Sao Paulo as Edson Arantes do Nascimento, helped Brazil win the World Cups in 1958, 1962, and 1970.
The injury limited his participation in Brazil’s victory in 1962 in Chile. Still, eight years later, when Brazil constructed one of the greatest teams ever and won the Jules Rimet trophy in Mexico thanks to a 4-1 victory over Italy in which Pele scored the opening goal, he was named player of the tournament.

According to medical accounts, Pele’s fight with colon cancer led to multiple organ failures, ultimately leading to his death. He was hospitalized for several illnesses, including a respiratory infection and heart and renal issues.
In September 2021, Pele had a colon tumor removed. On November 29, he was checked into the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Sao Paulo.
Doctors there said his colon cancer was showing “progression” and he needed “more extensive care to treat kidney and heart failure.”
