The much anticipated Avatar 2 is currently taking over theatres worldwide, but how does The Way of Water conclude and how does it set up Avatar 3?

The post-Pandora blues have returned after 13 years with a gorgeous fury thanks to the highly anticipated sequel to James Cameron’s mega-hit, Avatar: The Way of Water, which is still the highest-grossing film of all time.

“Awe-inspiring, cinematic hallelujah; James Cameron is back, and maybe he is the king of the earth after all,” wow wrote in our review.

Let’s discuss the movie’s conclusion and how it foreshadows what’s to come, as Avatar 2 is the first of four planned sequels, whereas the original film can be watched alone.

Avatar 2 Ending Explained

Quaritch attacks the Metkayina clan’s coasts (Stephen Lang) and his RDA soldiers in Avatar: The Way of Water. Its leaders initially have no desire to engage in combat, but after seeing the cruel murder of a Tulkun by the RDA—whom the Na’vi regard as their spiritual sisters and brothers—they become enraged and seek retribution.

The Tulkun outcast, who has been shot with a tracking dart and is marked for death, is sought after by Jake and Neytiri’s children. In the process of freeing him, they are captured by Quaritch, gathered in a massive fishing net, and restrained to the boat’s railing.

Tulkun, a misfit, notices Lo’ak from beneath the ocean. The whale becomes enraged and distressed and begins to flail around on the ocean floor before giving the RDA the Free Willy treatment and leaping out of the water to land on the ship. Those who weren’t suffocated by the mammal’s weight are quickly eliminated differently; some are “finned,” while others are thrown into the ocean. It is tremendously cathartic when Scoresby, the awful whaler, likewise has his arm severed by his dynamite harpoon.

The children can escape, but Jake and Quaritch have a protracted argument. They engage in gunfire exchanges and neck-biting attacks on each other’s beasts while they duel on their banshees. While attempting to aid Lo’ak and Spider in escaping, Neteyam is shot and murdered. As Neytiri sobs over losing her son, Quaritch contacts Jake again and presents him with the same decision: his life or the lives of his children.

Jake locates Tuk, but Quaritch is choking Kiri with a knife. Neytiri responds by eliminating every last RDA soldier in her line of sight and stabbing Spider in the chest, knowing that doing so will enrage Quaritch because Spider is his son. Quaritch releases Kiri while threatening to kill him. Jake goes head-to-head with Quaritch when you believe they are about to be set free.

The others, meanwhile, are in grave danger: Spider and Kiri are left alone on the surface as the boat starts to rise and fall like the Titanic, and Tuk is drawn into the ship’s bowels with Neytiri after her.

Quaritch is eventually defeated by Jake, who submerges him and appears to kill him, but this traps him. While Kiri uses her abilities to call forth the bright, underwater fireflies (essentially the ocean’s version of wood sprites) to find Neytiri and Tuk and take them to safety, Lo’ak locates him and teaches him how to breathe to survive.

But there’s a catch: Quaritch wasn’t slain. Spider discovers him writhing in the water and, despite his better (and inescapable) judgment, saves him. He is battered, bruised, and alone, yet Spider refuses to accompany him. Before going back to Jake and Neytiri, he hisses at his father, and Quaritch takes off on his own, perhaps in the direction of the RDA base.

The folklore in Avatar claimed that “all energy is borrowed.” The film concludes with Neteyam’s burial, during which the golden seabed’s tentacles tenderly envelop him and embrace his energy for the last time. The Metkayina clan formally accepts Jake and Neytiri as members. As the camera gets near his closed-eye face, he replies, “I can’t run from it; this is my stronghold. His eyes open, and the credits blare onto the screen, just like in the first movie.”

How is Avatar 2 preparing for Avatar 3?

One of the most enigmatic figures is the Spider. Although we don’t know who his mother is, it is evident that his relationship with Quaritch will change and become dangerous for Jake and Neytiri. This relationship will likely play a significant role in the upcoming sequel.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Stephen Lang said: “Whatever you may expect, I hope the character defies that. I hope people feel surprised by what he goes through and what he becomes; I think you will recognize him, albeit I will be in a different framework. But I think you will recognize the attitude, the swagger, the qualities of leadership that he has.”

“I think if you have expectations of that, those will be fulfilled. Also, he is always looking for a fight. That is what he is there for; that is his mission. But I believe there will be some surprises as we continue to mine this character for everything he is worth. Because there would be no point in returning the role to repeat itself, that would be pointless; it would be uninteresting. So expect the unexpected, that is what I would say.”

Kiri is a hugely intriguing topic as well. If her conception is still a “total mystery,” how did she come into the world? How is she, more than anyone else, so involved with Eywa? Does she have extraordinary abilities? It is still uncertain.

Final Lines

On December 16, 2022, Avatar: The Way Of Water exploded onto movie screens.

The Way Of Water, which takes place more than ten years after the first movie’s events, opens in an era of immense tranquility, with Jake Sully and Neytiri raising their family, including their daughters Tuk and Kiri as well as their sons Neteyam and Lo’ak.
