Even though he was only a freshman, McAfee was given the starting position for West Virginia. As a first-year player, he kicked 70 kickoffs had 20 touchbacks and went 11 for 18 on field goals. McAfee’s greatest moment came in a 46-44 triple-overtime victory over Louisville which was reached thanks to a successful McAfee onside kick. The onside kick set up Steve Slaton for a game-tying touchdown run from one yard out.
The Mountaineers went 10-2 overall and defeated Georgia Tech in the Gator Bowl. Their only losses came to Louisville and USF. As McAfee began his junior year, he missed an extra point against Western Michigan breaking a streak of 106. Two of his four field goal attempts were blocked by Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl bringing his season total to two for four.
After the bowl games were over, he was selected to ESPN’s All-Bowl Team. McAfee failed to convert on two relatively easy field goal attempts in West Virginia University’s 13-9 loss to the winless Pittsburgh Panthers in the BCS National Championship Game. He is one of the top kickers in college football as evidenced by his inclusion on the 2007 Lou Groza Award semi-finalist list. McAfee was a three-time Big East Special Team Player of the Week award winner in 2007 and a second-team All-Big East selection.
For the second year in a row, he was recognized by West Virginia with the Scott Shirley Award. McAfee kicked two field goals including a career-long from 52 yards, six extra points and two points in the 48-21 season-opening win over Villanova. McAfee surpassed Slaton as the school’s all-time leading scorer with a field goal in the subsequent 27-3 victory over Marshall.
In a 34–17 victory over Auburn, he kicked two field goals moving him into third place all-time in the Big East in that category. On November 8th, trailing Cincinnati by 13 points with 1:11 left in the game, the Mountaineers scored a safety, a touchdown and a two-point conversion to cut the deficit to just three points. After 18 seconds of play, McAfee’s onside kick was brought back.

McAfee had a career-best 44.7-yard punting average led the Big East with 23 punts inside the 20-yard line punted for a total of 2,639 yards and had a long of 65 yards in his senior season.
