What was the day of David Carradine Death?
On May 31st, 2009, David Carradine landed in Bangkok, Thailand, to begin filming his newest movie, Stretch. On June 3, he was supposed to go out to dinner with his assistant and some other members of the film crew. But they were unable to reach him. An hour later, Carradine called the assistant only to be told that the crew was elsewhere in town and that he would have to find other plans for that night.
Carradine was discovered dead on Thursday, June 4 at the age of 72 in his room at the Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel on 2 Witthayu Road in downtown Bangkok. It was reported by the officers on duty at the nearby Lumphini Police Station that Carradine was found naked and hanging from the closet’s curtain cord. No signs of struggle were discovered and police determined he had been dead for at least 12 hours. Since there was no suicide note and he was found with a rope around his neck and his genitalia. Thai police speculated that he may have accidentally suffocated from auto-erotic asphyxiation.
David Carradine Early Life
Carradine’s parents, actor John Carradine and actress Ardanelle Abigail Carradine had him on December 8, 1936 in Hollywood, California. He was their eldest child, Bruce, Keith, Christopher and Robert Carradine are his half-brothers and he is also the uncle of Ever Carradine and Martha Plimpton. He was primarily of Irish descent and was the great-grandson of Methodist evangelical writer Beverly Carradine and the grandnephew of artist Will Foster.
Carradine, who is known as Jack by his loved ones had a tumultuous upbringing. He was the first of his father’s four marriages while his mother had already been divorced three times by the time he was born. Carradine was adopted by his father John from his mother, who was already the mother of a son by her first husband. John Carradine wanted a big family and was devastated when his wife had multiple miscarriages and he learned she had secretly had abortions.
Set against the tensions in his parent’s marriage, David came close to committing suicide by hanging himself when he was only five years old. He explained that he and Bruce, his older half-brother whom John had adopted had recently learned that they did not share a biological father. Carradine continued, “My father saved me and then confiscated and burned my comic book collection which was scarcely the point”.
David Carradine Career
After serving his country, Carradine decided to pursue acting seriously. The public might confuse him with his famous father, so he was advised to change his name. In a 2005 interview, Carradine recalled that his father supported his decision to become an actor. He flew all the way from Los Angeles to San Francisco to see my first professional performance which was a Romeo and Juliet play.
Soon after, he advised me freely and candidly. Now he thinks I’m pretty cool. The Royal Hunt of the Sun, a play by Peter Shaffer about the fall of the Inca Empire at the hands of the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro gave Carradine his first major break on Broadway. Atahuallpa was played by Carradine and Christopher Plummer was Pizarro. The premiere took place in October of 1965 and the play ran for a total of 261 performances.
According to Carradine many of the important roles that I got later on were because the guy who was going to hire me was in that audience and had his mind blown. For his performance, Carradine received the 1965 Theatre World Award for Best Debut Performance. He was also recognized as one of Broadway and Off-Most Broadway’s Promising Individuals by Theatre World.
In 1968, Plummer stepped into Carradine’s shoes for the film adaptation of the play. In May of 1966, Carradine accepted an offer to star in the TV series Shane, a western from 1966 based on a 1949 novel of the same name which had previously been filmed in 1953. Carradine starred alongside Jill Ireland in the lead role. He said, “I know I have some kind of vision that most actors and directors don’t have so it becomes a duty to exercise that vision”.
