This Sunday at Acrisure Stadium the Steelers were going to retire Harris’ No. 32 in honor of the 50th anniversary of his catch which occurred in the 1972 AFC divisional playoffs against the Oakland Raiders.
The Steeler’s head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media on Tuesday and praised Harris’ catch.
“During that time, I was located at Seat 135 of the stadium. Around the eighth month mark, I entered the world. I find it really amusing. Unexpectedly, I’ve already talked to 75,000 people who were there that day “To quote Tomlin: “It’s a stunning milestone in the development of our game.
“It’s humbling to be so close to it, to work for this organization, and to comprehend the influence it has had on this franchise, the career it created in Franco [Harris], a gold-jacket career, and what it did for them that season in terms of shifting the trajectory of that season.”
“There are many things that make it the play that it is and the most significant play in the history of our game. It’s just an honor to be in proximity to it. To know the man involved, to call Pittsburgh home, and so it’s awesome to be a part of and to witness. But, at the same time, we understand that we’ve got business, we’ve got a present-day business, and the best way we can honor him and that is by performing. We’re going to work extremely hard to prepare ourselves leading up to it.”
When Harris was chosen out of Penn State in 1972, he made an early impact on the Pittsburgh Steelers. He rushed for 1,055 yards and 10 touchdowns as a rookie, earning him the award for Offensive Rookie of the Year.
The “Immaculate Reception” occurred with 22 seconds left in the game with the Steelers down 7-6 to the Raiders in a 4th-and-10 situation on their own 44-yard line. Terry Bradshaw launched a deep downfield pass intended for John “Frenchy” Fuqua, but it somehow ricocheted off Fuqua and into Harris’ hands.
