Eight of Haarlem’s local brewer Jan Willemsz Leyster’s children were born to Leyster. Her education is a mystery, however, she was referenced in the book Beschrijvinge ende lof der Stadt Haerlem by the contemporary poet of Haarlem, Samuel Ampzing (1628)
After her father’s financial ruin, some historians believe Leyster turned to paint as a means of providing for her family. Perhaps she had art lessons from Frans Pietersz de Grebber, who, in the 1620s, ran a reputable studio in Haarlem. Her family relocated to Utrecht during this period, thus she may have crossed paths with the Utrecht Caravaggisti.

Since “Leister” literally translates to “Lead star” in Dutch, it was also the moniker by which Dutch seamen of the time referred to the North Star. There may have been a miscommunication, or even dishonesty, going back to Leyster’s time. The Leyster The Jolly Companions was acquired by Sir Luke Schaub as a Hals in the 1600s. As one of the finest Hals paintings, the piece found its way to the London gallery of Wertheimer on Bond Street. Sir John Millars shared Wertheimer’s assessment of the painting’s authenticity and worth. In exchange for £4,500, Wertheimer parted ways with his picture to an English company. This gallery then resold the artwork as a fake Hals to the French aristocrat Baron Schlichting in Paris.
