1923 Season 1 Episode 1

1923 Season 1 Episode 1

When viewers met the first American-born Duttons in last year’s gorgeous and plentiful 1883, they met a family whose struggle would come to define the tenacity, ferocity and strength of Yellowstone’s characters. The family’s journey across the continent to claim their piece of Montana was plagued by tragedy almost from the start and when they finally settled in, they found that the land they had come to call home still had plenty of room to grow.

The threat of violence would always loom over this family, as envisioned by Taylor Sheridan. The continuing plot of 1923 is perhaps predictably, a well-known one. Like 1883, the new limited series makes use of the eerie voice of Elsa Dutton (Isabel May) to narrate the brief history of the decades that have passed since her death and the establishment of the American frontier.

Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill), James’s widow after his untimely death, wrote to Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford), their older brother inviting him to move to Montana to help the family prosper. You can read about 1923 Season 1 Episode 1 below.

Recap of 1923 Season 1 Episode 1

The new Yellowstone prequel, 1923, picks up 40 years after the events of 1883. The Dutton family’s situation has improved greatly since we last saw them on the Oregon Trail, but every day is still a struggle that requires a lot of energy and a lot of dust to overcome. Within the next few moments, we’ll be asking for your feedback on the pilot episode. First, however, is a quick review of the highlights.

Beginning the hour, we see a terrified man fleeing from unknown attackers. He falls to the ground after being hit by a shot and it’s soon revealed who fired the gun. Helen Mirren’s character, Cara Dutton (from The Queen) is this mysterious woman. He begs her to hold off saying that if she kills him, she will never enter Heaven. She asks, “What do you know about Heaven?” before going to kill him for good, only to realize she’s out of bullets.

He moves quickly to get a shot off while she does but she is too quick. She shoots him in the head, yells and then leaves. A voiceover says, “Violence has always haunted this family” and if you’ve seen 1883, you’ll recognize the speaker as Elsa. She claims that the Dutton family’s history of violence followed them from Europe to the United States and that in places where it didn’t, the United States actively sought it out.

1923 Season 1 Episode 1

She is speaking over a series of seemingly unrelated scenes that cut between them. In Africa, we see a young man in khaki hold his ground as a lion charges at him. He shoots the huge cat as it leaps at him much to the delight of his two friends who have been tracking the beast with him. The scene shifts to show Harrison Ford’s character, Jacob Dutton from “Star Wars” riding a horse through a field full of dead sheep, many of which are covered in flies. Locusts also appear to be a problem, as Jacob, his companions and their horses are all infested with them and show no signs of wanting to move.

From the final episode of 1883, we learn that she passed away before any of the other children. John, her younger brother, was a young child when the family moved to Montana. Elsa explains that after her father died, which we saw in a flashback, her mother wrote to her brother pleading with him to move his family and save them.

My mother was found frozen in a snowdrift and my two brothers were half-starved and barely able to speak when he finally arrived a year later. He adopted them and brought up his kids turning my dad’s dream into a multimillion-dollar business.
