Read details here: Before his untimely death on December 12, 2022, American football coach Michael Charles Leach (March 9, 1961 – December 12, 2022) won a total of 102 games at the Division I FBS level. He designed the NCAA’s record-breaking air raid offence and won national coaching awards on two separate occasions. From 2000 through 2009, he led Texas Tech University’s football team as head coach, where he racked up the most victories in programme history.

After his time at Texas Tech, he became the head coach at Washington State University, where he remained until 2019. During that time, he amassed the third-most victories of any coach in programme history. Who is Mike Leach? Mike Leach was born in Susanville, California to parents Frank and Sandra Leach. While Leach was growing up, he and his family travelled around a lot since his father, Frank, was a forester for the government. When Leach was young, his family joined the Latter-day Saint faith. He joined Boy Scout Troop 58 in Cody and eventually became an Eagle Scout.

Leach played football at Cody High School from 1975 to 1978 before being recruited to play for Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah. He graduated from Cody High School in 1979. He was unable to play football in college because of an ankle injury he sustained in high school, so he switched to rugby instead.

Leach kept close ties to the football team, even attending some of the film study sessions. BYU’s pass-heavy attack was led by head coach LaVell Edwards, offensive coordinator Norm Chow, and quarterbacks Marc Wilson, Jim McMahon, and Steve Young. In 1983, Leach earned his bachelor’s degree in American studies.

Cal Poly and College of the Desert hired Leach as an assistant coach in 1987, and he began his career that year (in 1988).

He coached the Pori Bears of the Finnish-American Football League in 1989. In 1989 he became the offensive coordinator for Hal Mumme’s Iowa Wesleyan University football team. It was their home for three years before they relocated to Valdosta State (1992–1996) and later Kentucky (1997–1998). They became famous for creating the air raid offence, which helped their teams achieve unprecedented success on offence. Tim Couch, the quarterback for Kentucky, was selected first overall in the NFL draught.

Oklahoma hired Leach for the 1999 season with Bob Stoops at the helm. While under Leach, Oklahoma’s offence went from 11th in the Big 12 Conference in 1998 to first in 1999.

There were six children in Leach’s family, and he was the oldest. He and his wife, Sharon, raised four kids, and now they’re grandparents to three.

Unlike most head coaches in Division I, Leach had never played collegiate football. Leach taught his players the history of pirates like Blackbeard and Calico Jack from the 18th century and instructed them to “swing their swords” before games. People said his office looked like a museum of pirate artefacts. Leach loved the pirates’ sense of teamwork in particular.

Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellinger said that Leach was in critical condition that night in his article. According to Clarion-Ledger, Leach experienced a massive heart attack, went without medical assistance for 10 to 15 minutes, and then had seizures, which may have exacerbated the brain damage he experienced as a result of the heart attack. His passing came the following day when he was 61 years old. Mississippi State released a statement saying that “complications linked to a cardiac ailment” were the official cause of death.
