Republican House Minority Leader Kevin Owen McCarthy was born in the United States on January 26, 1965. Republican Party member who held the position of House Majority Leader from 2014 to 2019, working with Speakers John Boehner and Paul Ryan.
McCarthy is now serving his eighth term in the House of Representatives. From 2007 to 2013, he represented California’s 22nd congressional district, and from 2013, he has represented California’s 23rd congressional district. In the midterm elections of 2022, he guided the Republicans to victory and they took control of the House of Representatives.
McCarthy has served as the chairman of both the California Young Republicans and the Young Republican National Federation. From 2002 to 2006, he served in the California State Assembly, the final two years of which he spent as a minority leader. In 2006, he won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
In his second tenure as Republican Chief Deputy Whip from 2009 to 2011, McCarthy was elected to the House leadership. After the Republican takeover of the House in 2011, he served as majority whip from that year until August 2014, when he was elected majority leader to succeed Eric Cantor, who had been defeated in his primary.

Kevin McCarthy’s Childhood & Early Learning
McCarthy’s mother, Roberta Darlene (née Palladino), was a homemaker, while his father, Owen McCarthy, was an assistant city fire chief. He was born on January 26, 1965, in Bakersfield, California. McCarthy’s family has been living in Kern County for four generations. Both his maternal and paternal grandfathers were immigrants: one from Italy and the other from Ireland. McCarthy’s parents are lifelong Democrats, making him the first Republican in his family. At California State University, Bakersfield, he earned a BS in marketing in 1989 and an MBA in 1994.
Kevin McCarthy’s Political Career
McCarthy worked on Congressman Bill Thomas’s staff from 1987 to 2002. He led the California Young Republicans as chairman in 1995. He presided over the Young Republican National Federation (YRNF) from 1999 to 2001. He served as Thomas’ district director from the late 1990s through the turn of the millennium. McCarthy was first elected as a trustee of the Kern Community College District in 2000.
McCarthy was a 2002 California State Assembly election winner. In 2003, he took over as the Republican whip on the House floor. In 2006, he won a spot in Congress after running unopposed.

Both McCarthy and his wife Judy’s offspring are from previous relationships. They have always called Bakersfield home. He used to be on the board of directors for Kern’s Community Action Partnership.
McCarthy was accused of having an extramarital affair with Representative Renee Ellmers in October 2015. He had abruptly left the run for Speaker of the House just before the allegations appeared, so it was clear that something was up. Representative Walter B. Jones Jr. wrote to Republican Conference chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers, urging her to exclude from consideration any leadership candidates with “misdeeds.” McCarthy and Ellmers have both refuted the charges against them.
An investigation published in October 2018 revealed that McCarthy’s brother-in-company, law’s Vortex Construction, had received $7.6 million in no-bid and other prime federal contracts since the year 2000. This money was paid to William “Bill” Wages. Construction projects at Naval Air Stations China Lake and Lemoore in Bakersfield and Kings County, California, respectively, accounted for the bulk of the work.

On Tuesday, US Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick and other law enforcement officers were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor Congress can bestow, for their efforts in protecting the US Capitol on January 6. One day after the uprising, Sicknick had a series of strokes and died of natural causes. After Sicknick passed away, his family accepted the gold medal on his behalf, but they declined to shake the hands of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell or House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy.
Gladys Sicknick earlier told them she didn’t shake their hands because “They’re just two-faced.”
“I’m sick and tired of them praising the Capitol Police, then turning around and… walk down to Mar-a-Lago and kiss his ring and come back and stand here and sit with – it just, it just hurts,” she remarked, alluding to former President Donald Trump.
McCarthy has paid multiple visits to the former president at his Mar-a-Lago resort, while McConnell has previously chastised Trump and reprimanded him for actions during the January 6 revolt.

To reporters’ inquiries about the slight, the Senate minority leader said Tuesday: “I would answer by saying today we presented the gold medal to the heroes of January 6. We hold them in the highest esteem. They risked everything, thus today we awarded the heroes of January 6 with a gold medal”.
On Wednesday, Gladys Sicknick said, “I just don’t see how they can stand there and talk to the press, talk to the cameras and say what they do knowing what they’ve done in the past.” This was in response to a question about if she had a message for McConnell and McCarthy“.
