Portia’s White Lotus Season 2 Fashion Style Sets Twitter Trend

Portia White Lotus Season 2

Middle-aged heiress Tanya McQuoid gives her stressed personal assistant a wake-up call on Sunday’s episode of The White Lotus, telling her, “Get your shit together, Portia.” The statement was meant to poke fun at Portia’s bad taste in men and aimlessness, but it might just as easily have been a reference to her dubious fashion sense.

Fashion For weeks, Portia’s clothing has been the subject of ridicule and debate on social media. Her “chaotic and plainly algorithmically informed” outfits were called “poor but perfect”. Harper’s Bazaar was more kind, calling her “masterfully textured garments” rather than “ambiently tasteless.”

Portia, portrayed by Haley Lu Richardson, encapsulates many of the clichés about Generation Z. She suffers from clinical depression and spends almost all of her time online. Portia, stuck in Sicily with her dependent boss, waxes lyrical about her desire to break free of social media. Contrary to what her beaded phone chain and a suitcase full of influencer-favorite labels like Stussy, Aries and Brandy Melville might have you believe, she is not a typical student. “She’s young, she doesn’t really know who she is and she’s trying on different ideas,” Emmy-winning costume designer Alex Bovaird explained to Variety. “Sometimes she dresses more dainty, and sometimes she dresses like a boy. She did bring a couple of nice dresses because she knew she was going to dinner, but the price point is $100–$200 or cheaper.”

The Swan Lake sweater vest and knit halter dress that Portia wears in the pilot are both from the London-based, Emma Chamberlain-approved label House of Sunny, as are the later items she wears on dates with Jack (played by Leo Woodall), a British bad boy.

Portia always seems to be decades behind the times and fashions. She even wears knits when it’s hot outside. She mixes rapid fashion from the digital age with vintage treasures from the 1990s and early 2000s she found on the website Depop. When asked by Vogue how she captured the “very haphazard, random approach and adopting things from other eras” aesthetic of the 20-something generation, Bovaird said she shopped at stores like Zoo Vintage in Rome and Los Feliz in Barcelona for items like the Y2K psychedelic print dress below. “Our goal with Portia was that she doesn’t entirely hit the mark,” Bovaird added. A few of her clothes are adorable, and she tries extremely hard, while others are just naff. At breakfast, she appears half-dressed and defeated; on dates with Albie or Jack, she makes more of an effort, but she still looks disorganized—on purpose.

While co-star Theo James continuously mocked Richardson about her “ugly-ass” white sandals, the hat was a DIY project of Richardson’s own design, as she confessed to W. Off-screen, Richardson wears a rainbow hat that is “weirder” than the one she crocheted.

Portia’s chartreuse manicure and crooked sandals are only two examples of her erratic style. Bovaird compared this method to Coco Chanel’s advice on accessorizing. When leaving the house, Bovaird and Richardson would add an item to each of their outfits, throwing them off balance, rather than taking at least one item off in the mirror. Take Portia’s blouse from the third episode, which she wore as a belt over her crochet minidress from Zara. You can also read about White Lotus Season 2 Episode 5.

Portia comes dangerously close to pulling off spectacular feats of power clashing in a matter of moments. For a night out at the beach club, Portia chooses to wear a zebra-print bikini top and a striped bolero.

Bovaird revealed that she incorporated florals, fruits, and animals into the ensemble’s wardrobe and accessories. According to the costume designer, who was quoted, “there’s this Fellini-esque surrealism, too, with some weird designs and this vivid, dreamlike, psychedelic element to some of the ensembles.”

She continued, “There are also face prints that evoke the ubiquitous Testa di Moro pottery heads.” “Portia’s colorful face-print tank top is actually a repurposed outfit by Custo Barcelona,” the costume designer said. It’s very out there. She reminds me of a raver in appearance. You can also read about where is the  White Lotus Season 2 filmed?

Richardson told W, “I despise Portia’s wardrobe, but then I look in my closet and I’m the exact same.” To wit, Richardson’s feathered sleeve Moschino minidress and knee-high pumps from the premiere. Another option is the Marques Almeida patchwork slip dress she wore to the GQ 2022 Men of the Year Party.

Mike White, the mind of White Lotus, excels at eliciting that visceral recoil—the “itch” before the light bulb goes off—in his listeners. The play is, of course, about us. I think that’s what this show is about,” Richardson said. “Inspiring introspection”
