Scott was born on 4 April 1972 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is raised by single parents, her mother Joyce Scott. She completed her education at Philadelphia High School for girls. From her childhood, she wanted to become a teacher but later Scott changed her mind. She began her career with poetry reading and there she was noticed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson who asked her to join their band.
Her first song with the band is “You Got Me”, which got Emmy awards. Steve McKee signed her, Scott’s debut album is Who Is Jill Scott?: Words and Sounds Vol. 1 released in 2000. Her next album named Experience: Jill Scott 826+, and Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 were released in 2001 and 2004. Collaborating with George Benson and Al Jarreau for “God Bless The Child” she won Grammy awards for the second time.

Anupa Mistry writes about Scott “Scott’s attention to conversations and consciousness in her particular community and black America at large solidified her music as being of the people. She wrote about hip-hop, jazz, reparations, Abrahamic religious texts, soul food (and what collards do to your bowels), the noted and imprisoned activist Mumia Abu-Jamal, diasporic ideation, going to the market, and late nights on the phone…Jilly from Philly…stays keeping it real.”

In 2000 Scott announced a tour titled ‘Who is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds Vol. 1’ which is their debut album. Now on the 23rd anniversary, she again announced it. Before now she planned for it in 2020 but canceled it because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Scott stated that she will be coming soon on road for her fans, with her hits like “Gettin’ in the Way,” “A Long Walk” and others.
Live Nation Urban produced the tour and selected 20 markets from the country. Her main focused residence is MGM National Harbor on Mother’s Day and at her home town Philadelphia at the MET Philadelphia. It will be her first show at her native place. It will be held in Arden Theatre for a nonprofit by the Blues Babe Foundation.
“My band and I were so excited three years ago, but that damn COVID shut us down,” Scott said. “Now, we are outside! Come see me. Come feel again. Relive your favorite moments. Y’all ready to settle down and get with this?!? It’s a lot of love here.”
