Family of Pittsburgh Shooting Victim Asks Community to Reform

A 4-year-old girl was shot and murdered in Pittsburgh, and her family and friends gathered to memorialize her. On Thursday night, Kaari Thompson and her mother were shot while walking down Lincoln Avenue. After some time, Thompson was pronounced dead in a medical facility.

On Sunday, many who knew and loved the young girl gathered at the site of the shooting to release balloons in her memory.

“This was senseless. Why would you want to gun down a 4-year-old?” said Heather Thompson, Kaari’s aunt.

Police are still looking into the shooting that took Thompson’s life, and Kaari’s mom is still in serious condition, so naturally, those who have been affected by the tragedy have a lot of questions.

As a family, we are utterly heartbroken. Members of her family and ours. Heather Thompson revealed that her mother was hospitalized and was in a battle for her life. According to Channel 11, Thompson’s mom is free on bond while she awaits trial for attempted murder. They say she shot two teenagers in Homewood last August.

Police provided an update less than 24 hours after the shooting but did not disclose a motive. The authorities asked parents to keep an eye on their kids’ social media profiles.

Pittsburg’s mayor Ed Gainey also addressed the crowd, delivering an impassioned speech in which he pleaded for an end to the city’s  Mayor Gainey calls on residents to pitch in and end the city’s cycle of bloodshed.

Do you want to keep losing our kids? That’s the true question. It was Gainey who made the remark. Everyone here understands that our generation has brought this culture of violence upon our children. They’re too young to instill a violent mindset in the community, you see.

Despite everything the family is working to preserve the happy memories they have of the young child. I got more happiness out of our four years together than most people do in forty.

“I’m going to miss her very much,” said Kaari’s grandfather, Kirk Thompson.

Since no one seems to be in custody at this time relatives are appealing to the public for help.

Heather Thompson pleaded for anyone with information or sightings to “call somebody, notify anyone.” The girl’s grandfather, meantime, is begging locals to make positive changes so that he and his family can leave the neighborhood. As Kirk Thompson put it, “we can’t recover with this going on, so the whole community needs for this to be taken care of.”
