Jacob deGrom or Justin Verlander: Pitchers are needed by the New York Mets. In 2022, they’ll be losing over half of their starting rotation to free agency. Only Max Scherzer and Carlos Carrasco are locked for the 2023 rotation, making the necessity for an ace that much more apparent.
The Mets have the option of signing one of two aging aces to a shorter contract. Let’s take a look at recent World Series champion Justin Verlander. Not to mention Jacob deGrom, who has spent his whole professional baseball career with the Mets and deserves to remain there.
Who is better Jacob deGrom or Justin Verlander?
Both deGrom and Verlander are on the Mets’ want list. They are two veteran pitchers who have each won many Cy Young Awards. Each would be a tremendous improvement. It’s true that you can’t go wrong with either choice, but one is superior.
So, let’s begin with Jacob deGrom. Before he started getting injured, the 34-year-pitching old’s was unmatched in the world. He’s missed considerable time over the past two seasons due to a variety of arm problems. The last two years have yielded only 26 starts for him.

Although the injuries have been disheartening when healthy he remains the best pitcher in the world. Despite the fact that he returned in August when he wasn’t at his best, he still managed to strike out 102 batters in 64.1 innings while only walking eight. His 12.75 K/BB ratio is unheard of, but in 2021 he actually had 13.27 K/BB.
In the first half of the season, his ERA was 1.08, but he was injured and unable to pitch at all. I understand why it’s challenging to sign deGrom because of the uncertainty around his starting rotation.
i’d take degrom any day of year, he’s younger and a better pitcher than JV

Comparing Justin Verlander to deGrom, there aren’t very many noticeable differences. After he had Tommy John surgery in 2020, he only started once that year and was out for the whole 2021 campaign. Amazingly, he bounced back to post a 1.75 ERA in 28 starts and win the Cy Young Award the next season.
Verlander, who will turn 40 before Opening Day, allegedly wants a deal equivalent to the three-year, $130 million deal Scherzer signed with the Mets last year.
While there’s no denying that Verlander is a quality pitcher, it’s puzzling that the Mets would rather sign him to a contract worth that much money than deGrom. I highly doubt deGrom would be able to get anywhere near as much as Scherzer did in free agency.
deGrom is younger by five years and hasn’t suffered any serious injuries over the past two seasons. Every pitcher is at risk of having Tommy John Surgery with every toss of the ball, but those who have just undergone the procedure are especially at risk.
Well, I trust Verlander’s durability significantly more

Why would the Mets be in touch with a pitcher who has missed the last two seasons due to injury if they are so concerned about Jacob deGrom’s health? Considering his skill level and the fact that we know he has what it takes to be the best pitcher in New York, I believe most people would place deGrom ahead of Verlander.

Bring back deGrom. Both have their own injury histories but you cannot deny that Verlander’s age compounds the durability concerns.

The Mets have an injury decision to make between two pitchers. Over the past two years, Verlander has made two more starts than deGrom has. Like Jake, Verlander is five years older. If you have to choose between two injured starting pitchers, shouldn’t you take the younger, more experienced one who has already pitched for the Mets? To me, it’s quite clear. So, what do you make of it all?
