How much is Alex Jones net worth? Alex Jones, who claimed the 2012 shooting that killed 20 children and six educators was a “hoax,” was found liable for $965 million in defamation damages after a nearly four-week trial. He was ordered a month later to pay an additional $473 million in punitive damages and told not to take his assets out of the country.

But how much Jones is actually worth and whether or not the plaintiffs will receive any of the money are still open questions. The defense team has already filed for a fresh trial. Free Speech Systems, the business that owns Infowars, has filed for bankruptcy, and Jones’s financial situation is shrouded in mystery.

Jones is already on the hook for $49 million awarded by a Texas jury in a similar defamation awards lawsuit in that state in August to the parents of Jesse Lewis, one of the children killed in the incident. However, on October 20 a Texas judge will decide if Jones may use a state rule that caps damages at $750,000 in his favor.

An economist who testified on behalf of Jones’ parents in his Texas trial put his net worth anywhere from $135 million to $270 million. Jones, who filed for bankruptcy for Free Speech Systems in late July, would not confirm those numbers and told the Texas jury at one point that he was “bankrupt.” Bankruptcy documents have been shielded by the federal courts while the trial is proceeding.

Jones has been warned not to bring up his bankruptcy filing in court by both the Texas judge presiding over his case, Maya Guerra Gamble, and the Connecticut Superior Court judge presiding over the Waterbury trial, Barbara Bellis.

Financial forensic expert Bernard Francis Pettingill, Jr. testified in a Texas courtroom in August that Alex Jones had been embezzling money from his main company, Free Speech Systems, for years, especially after he lost three defamation lawsuits by default in 2021.

Jones withdrew $65 million in September 2021 after Gamble determined that he had lost the litigation to Sandy Hook families by default for not complying with court instructions, Pettingill said.

Jones was meant to submit financial documents as part of the lawsuit, but Pettingill was unable to get ahold of them. Pettingill instead relied on publicly available resources, he explained. Jones claims he is exempt from filing any required documentation with the Texas Secretary of State since Free Speech Systems is a private firm and not publicly listed.

He calculated that Jones earns around $70 million each year between Infowars and the company’s other offerings (which include health supplements, novels, and more).

According to Pettingill, Jones’ seeming lack of wealth results from the $54 million loan he has on one of his firms. Also, he didn’t lose any money after becoming “de-platformed” (banned from multiple social media platforms) in 2018 for hate speech.

Last Thursday, during closing arguments, Chris Mattei, an attorney for the Sandy Hook families, argued that Jones intentionally withheld requested financial documents because he didn’t want the plaintiffs to have proof that he made money every time he mentioned Sandy Hook over the past decade due to increased viewers and sales.

While “these families were drowning in grief,” Mattei displayed data showing that Jones’ social media engagement with viewers increased by as much as 50 percent whenever he discussed the shooting on his Infowars platform.

The number of people who watched Jones’ assertions about the shooting from 2012 to 2018 on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube alone was 550 million and Mattei asked the jury to think how much one person would be awarded for a single lie and increase it by 550 million. He contended that all 15 lawsuit plaintiffs should receive that sum.

In this second of three trials with similar accusations, eight families and an FBI agent claimed Jones’ repeated claims that they were “crisis actors” who manufactured the tragedy motivated his followers to harass them online and in person.

Mattei had each family member testify about the loss of a loved one and the harassment they endured at the hands of Sandy Hook deniers who listened to Jones’ shows. Jessie Leavenworth, Rob Ryser and John Moritz all from the staff wrote bits and pieces of this piece.
