The Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari) movie, directed by Makoto Shinkai, opened to 1.33 million viewers and made 1.88 billion yen (about US$13.49 million) in its first three days.
The film’s opening weekend gross of 1,277,960,000 yen (about US$12.51 million) was 38.7 percent higher, and its total gross was 46.4 percent higher than the first three days of sales for Shinkai’s critically praised picture, your name. Suzume’s adventure, begun by her curiosity about this door, is about to take an unexpected turn. Shinkai has said that the film is a road movie set in Japan, a story about “closing doors” rather than opening them, and an excuse to go to the theater.
