WISCONSIN, GREEN BAY — Coach Mike McCarthy of the Cowboys has coached for the Green Bay Packers for portions of 13 seasons, thus he is the best person to know the ins and outs of Lambeau Field.
On the opening drive of Sunday’s OT, McCarthy decided not to attempt a 53-yard field goal against the wind when facing a fourth-and-3 situation from the Green Bay 35-yard line. Dak Prescott’s incomplete pass was the result. Six plays later, the Packers defeated the Dallas Cowboys 31-28, dropping them to third place in the NFC East.
We were inches away from kicking a field goal, McCarthy said. “Hey, to be completely honest, I thought we should go for it. Given the state of the game, I called it on second down. Penalty after a big play, Therefore, we just kept playing. We made wise calls. I approve of the fourth-and-3 decision. simply did not convert.”
Given that they had scored touchdowns on two of their final three possessions in regulation, the Packers still would have had a chance to win if Brett Maher had made the field goal.
Maher has only missed two shots from 59 yards this season. During the game, he claimed, the wind shifted its direction from pregame warm-ups.
The wind was undoubtedly an influence, according to Maher. “I believe I could have made a good, clean shot in that direction but hey, I love the decision to go for the victory in that circumstance. Our goal is to triumph in games. I believe that decision was wise.”
After two penalties (offside on wide receiver Jalen Tolbert and holding on linebacker Connor McGovern) negated Tony Pollard’s gains of 9 and 16 yards as the Cowboys advanced toward a potential winning touchdown in overtime, McCarthy was furious.
McCarthy remarked, “I thought we had complete control in overtime.” “I’m very, very, very unhappy with the penalties and other stuff. But you have to go through those obstacles. Hey, these guys, these fellas, they got it. But I’m just sorry for them.”
The players also felt sorry for McCarthy.
Many of them stated that they wanted to win the game for McCarthy, who led the Packers to victory in Super Bowl XLV and a record of 133-85-2. A pregame announcement was made in honor of his return as well as that of nine other Cowboys assistant coaches with ties to the Packers and he tipped his cap to the crowd following that.
Naturally, Prescott remarked, “We wanted to acquire it for Mike.” “It’s terrible that we didn’t. There you go. It cannot be sugarcoated in any way. There is nothing more to say. Although we intended to purchase it for Mike, our main goal was to add to our progress but we fell short of that goal. To improve this team going forward, we’re going to stick together.”
There were roughly 40 family members and friends there to celebrate McCarthy’s 59th birthday. He arrived six hours before the game started and had the opportunity to meet with a lot of people both inside and outside the Packers organization.
On the field, he hugged Aaron Rodgers and former receivers Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb before the game. McCarthy and Rodgers once more hugged after Mason Crosby’s game-winning field goal.
McCarthy was emotionally tired at the conclusion and reminiscing was not his thing. I’m not attempting to be impolite, he said. “I’m not. Okay, I’m done eating humble pie.”
