Ohio’s deer gun shooting season will begin shortly, but there are a few things you should know before venturing into the woods and fields.
To begin, everyone is free to go out and hunt starting on Monday, November 28, and ending on Monday, December 4. The weekends of November 19-20 are reserved for youth-only deer gun hunting, while December 17-18 are open to all hunters.
Division of Wildlife Chief Kendra Wecker stated in a statement, “Hunting deer in Ohio is a popular and valued activity that has been enjoyed by generations.” Ohio’s gun seasons provide a great chance to harvest venison with loved ones each autumn.
Specific shotguns, muzzleloaders, pistols, straight-walled cartridge rifles, and archery equipment are the only legal options for hunters this season.
Deer Hunting Seasons
Ohio’s white-tailed deer are often considered to be the state’s most sought-after game animal. Dates for the 2022-23 deer shooting season are consistent with the previous year. As in previous years, a hunter may only take one antlered deer and must not exceed the county bag limit.
The following are the 2022-2023 deer shooting seasons:
- Shots at deer will be allowed between September 24th, 2022, and February 5th, 2023.
- Dates for the 2022 teen deer hunt are November 19 and 20.
- Hunting seasons for deer are November 28th to December 4th and December 17th and 18th, 2022 with a gun.
- Muzzleloader hunting for deer, January 7-10, 2023.
- You can go hunting from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after dusk.
In 18 of these jurisdictions, the bag limit will go up. Clinton, Fayette, and Pickaway will be the three counties to see an increase from one deer to two. Allen, Auglaize, Champaign, Clark, Darke, Mercer, Miami, Morrow, Muskingum, Morrow, Perry, Preble, Putnam, Shelby, Van Wert, and Washington counties will go up to three deer (from two deer) in the coming year.
The purpose of the new deer bag limits is to halt the population expansion of the animals and to provide hunters with more opportunities to harvest them.

Disease Surveillance Area Deer Hunting Seasons
Since Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) was found in two deer in Wyandot County in 2020, a disease surveillance area has been set up. In 2021, tests found eight more animals to be CWD-positive.
The Division of Wildlife has taken extra steps in Hardin, Marion, and Wyandot counties to boost deer harvest, reduce disease transmission risk, and contain chronic wasting disease (CWD). White-tailed deer and other cervids are among those most at risk for contracting the chronic wasting disease (CWD).
This Saturday, September 10, archery deer shooting will open in the CWD surveillance area covering Hardin, Marion, and Wyandot counties. After hearing from hunters and landowners, the first scheduled start date of September 1 was changed.

The following are the dates for the deer hunting seasons in the disease
• Deer archery: Sept. 10, 2022-Feb. 5, 2023.
• Early deer gun: Oct. 8-10, 2022.
• Youth deer gun: Nov. 19-20, 2022.
• Deer gun: Nov. 28-Dec. 4, 2022; Dec. 17-18, 2022.
• Deer muzzleloader: Jan. 7-10, 2023.
• Hunting hours are 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.
You can go hunting from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after dusk. In addition, Big Island, Andreoff, and Wyandot wildlife areas have lifted their bans on public land deer hunting. Killdeer Plains and Lake La Su An are two wildlife refuges where public land restrictions have been lifted in the past.
