You will read that Andy Taylor has stage 4 cancer and how he is dealing with it? The original guitarist for Duran Duran, Andy Taylor, was recently diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer and was unable to attend the band’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame owing to his treatment.
At the Hall of Fame event at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, Taylor’s diagnosis was revealed four years earlier when the band read a letter from him to the audience.
They said Taylor had a setback that prevented him from flying from Ibiza to Los Angeles to reconnect with vocalist Simon Le Bon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, bassist John Taylor, and drummer Roger Taylor.
Before reforming in 2004 for a world tour and the album Astronaut, a five-piece band from Birmingham was slated to play together for the first time in 17 years at the ceremony.
On Saturday, they were the first performers to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, and they opened the ceremony by playing their breakthrough song, 1981’s Girls On Film. The set continued with songs like “Hungry Like the Wolf” and “Ordinary World” until they read the letter addressing Taylor’s absence.
Taylor said, “I was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer a little over four years ago“. Naturally, our family is no exception to the widespread impact of this disease and so I speak not just from the position as a family man, but also with genuine humility toward the band, the greatest fans a group could have and this extraordinary honor.
Until very recently, I was able to merely rock on thanks to the ‘Rodgers and Edwards’ of doctors and medical care. While the symptoms I’m experiencing are not necessarily life-threatening at the moment, there is currently no treatment available.
The name “Rodgers and Edwards” is a reference to Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards the pop producers and creators of Chic who collaborated extensively with Duran Duran.
“Recently I was doing OK following some highly advanced life-extending treatment, that is, until a week or so ago when I suffered a setback and despite the amazing efforts of my team, I had to be honest in that both physically and emotionally, I would be stretching my bounds,” concluded Taylor.
Yet, as the singer emphasized, “none of this needs to or should detract from what this band (with or without me) has achieved and sustained for 44 years.”
Taylor continued by saying he was “extremely proud of these four brothers” and “overjoyed” that they were accepting this honor, but that he was “really sorry and enormously upset” that he could not attend the ceremony and had even bought a new guitar for the occasion.
I was skeptical that this day would ever come. Alive to see this day is a blessing,” he continued.
Dolly Parton, Judas Priest, Harry Belafonte, Carly Simon, the Eurythmics and Lionel Richie all joined them in the Hall of Fame that night.
The Birmingham, England band Duran Duran first came together in 1978 and quickly became a major force in the 1980s with radio staples including “Rio,” “Wild Boys,” and “A View to a Kill,” their theme song for the James Bond film. All three Taylors are unrelated.

They have recently re-emerged on the scene with the release of their 15th studio album, Future Past and a tour celebrating their 40th anniversary, which included a performance at this year’s British Summer Time festival in London’s Hyde Park.
Also, they were featured in the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and sang at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee event at Buckingham Palace.
