Enola Holmes 2 Brilliantly Reintroduces Millie Bobby Brown to the Case

Enola Holmes 2

Enola Holmes 2 is a fantastic vehicle for Millie Bobby Brown and it successfully integrates the character’s renowned brother, Sherlock, into the plot in a more natural way than in the first film. The addition of historically accurate details about the terrible working conditions of the time sets the stage for a highly polished sequel that makes the first film’s plot seem simple and straightforward, not to mention a lot of fun.

The on-air screenplay opens with the disclaimer, “Some of what follows is true,” as Enola (Brown), Sherlock’s fiercely independent sister, takes up the cause of young girls who are mysteriously becoming ill while working in a matchstick factory.

After encountering resistance from adults due to her young, including the question, “Might your brother be free?” one of them goes missing, providing the perfect opportunity for the juvenile detective to step in and do some investigating.

Luckily, Enola’s case will eventually intersect with the one that her brother, the world-famous Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill) is working on at a younger, healthier age. In addition, the obtuse clues point to the involvement of a master criminal, providing the detective with a worthy opponent for his wits.

Enola continues to break the fourth wall to share asides and witticisms with the audience, interrupting an early sequence to suggest, “Perhaps I might explain,” and the film, again directed by Harry Bradbeer and scripted by Jack Thorne, stays true to the successful formula established by the books.

Brown (who also produces these projects) remains the not-so-secret ingredient, the “Stranger Things” star whom Netflix has sensibly recognized as a huge asset. You can’t help but think that the streaming service should book Enola as often as her college schedule will allow after she attends a fancy event and is reunited with the dashing and affluent Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge).

Numerous adaptations of Sherlock Holmes over the years at once attest to the character’s longevity and highlight how challenging it is to introduce a significant change to Baker Street.

Brown’s vivacious approach feels like the franchise’s missing spark, so the matchstick analogy works perfectly. Regardless matter where the protagonist’s name comes from, it seems unlikely that Netflix will wish to ignore Enola for very long.

On November 4th, Netflix will debut “Enola Holmes 2.”

Enola Holmes 2: Review

The initial Enola Holmes film had me completely captivated. The original, based on a series of young adult novels released in 2007, was a charming reworking of the classic Sherlock Holmes canon, with Millie Bobby Brown giving a magnetic performance as the title character, a moppet with a genius-level mind.

However, that vivacious spirit is noticeably absent from the sequel, which has many of the first film’s hallmarks but focuses more on setting up a franchise than on creating a compelling mystery.

Brown reprises her role as Enola, Sherlock’s younger sister and now the head of her own detective business, in the sequel. Since this is Victorian England, her clients quickly disregard her in favor of her more well-known sibling (Henry Cavill).

Enola Holmes 2 Recap

Enola Holmes looks directly into the camera and informs us that the game is back on as a young girl (a precocious Serrana Su-Ling Bliss) arrives asking for assistance in locating her adopted elder sister.

Several elements from the Holmes canon are woven into the novel alongside various puzzles, feminism, a real-life working-class uprising, a love story and more. A little over two hours in length, the sequel feels bloated due to the abundance of narrative points, with the actual detective work too often being completed by impossible leaps in logic and action sequences. It has all the trappings of a classic Sherlock story but very little of the meat.
