Irving’s refusal to apologize came hours before the FBI announced a “broad” threat to New Jersey synagogues, Irving’s home state. The Nets said they tried to help Irving comprehend the harm and risk of his comments and actions but Thursday’s interview showed little had changed.
Irving said he wasn’t malicious. He admitted some things in the documentary he tweeted were inaccurate but he didn’t say he shouldn’t have tweeted it. The program is based on a book claiming “many high-ranking Jews worship Satan and Lucifer.” The film’s director is a holocaust denier who invented a Hitler quotation to promote an antisemitic conspiracy theory.

Irving refused to talk to the media after the team’s two games this week to avoid upsetting supporters. On Thursday, he asked reporters why they weren’t inquiring about Black history in America, stating 300 million of his relatives are buried there.
“Where were you guys when I was a kid learning about the traumatic events of my familial history and what I’m proud to come from and proud to stand here?” Irving asked. “And why when I repeat myself that I’m not going to stand down, it has nothing to do with dismissing any other race or group of people.
“I’m proud of my background and everything we’ve been through and the fact that this has put me against the Jewish community and I’m answering questions about something I didn’t create and shared and I’m telling everyone I’m taking responsibility, then that’s where I sit.”

Irving criticized the film’s falsehoods. “I don’t deny the Holocaust. False. No way! Not from me. No tweets. I’ve never liked it. The Holocaust meant something to a vast group of people who suffered needlessly.
The Nets announced Irving’s suspension will extend “unless he completes objective rehabilitative steps” After he missed much of last season, the team didn’t extend his contract this summer. Irving opted into the final year of his deal, therefore he may be leaving the team. Steve Nash was fired after the Nets’ 2-6 start.
