Brooklyn Nets Suspended Kyrie

The Brooklyn Nets suspended Kyrie Irving for at least five games without pay Thursday for failing to “deny antisemitic ideas.” The Nets claimed Irving is “now ineligible to be involved with the Brooklyn Nets” after he refused to apologize for tweeting a link to an antisemitic work.

“We were surprised today when Kyrie refused to claim he had no antisemitic sentiments or recognize nasty content in the video. The Nets stated that wasn’t the first time he had the chance to clarify.

“Failure to condemn antisemitism when given a clear opportunity is highly distressing, against our principles and destructive to the team. We believe he’s unsuited for the Brooklyn Nets.

Irving’s refusal to apologize came hours before the FBI announced a “broad” threat to New Jersey synagogues, Irving’s home state. The Nets said they tried to help Irving comprehend the harm and risk of his comments and actions but Thursday’s interview showed little had changed.

Irving said he wasn’t malicious. He admitted some things in the documentary he tweeted were inaccurate but he didn’t say he shouldn’t have tweeted it. The program is based on a book claiming “many high-ranking Jews worship Satan and Lucifer.” The film’s director is a holocaust denier who invented a Hitler quotation to promote an antisemitic conspiracy theory.

Irving: “I didn’t make the film.”He didn’t deny antisemitism when asked subsequently. Irving: “I can’t be antisemitic if I know my roots.” Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt tweeted in reaction to Irving’s statement, “The answer to ‘Do you have any antisemitic beliefs?’ is always “NO”

“We believed @KyrieIrving when he claimed he would take responsibility but he didn’t,” Greenblatt said. Kyrie has much to do. Irving and the Nets each donated $500,000 to anti-hate charities the day before. Greenblatt said he couldn’t take Irving’s donation in good conscience.

Silver Thought Irving Should Continue

“While we appreciate that he agreed to work with the Brooklyn Nets and the Anti-Defamation League to combat antisemitism, I am disappointed that he has not offered an unqualified apology and more specifically denounced the vile and harmful content in the film he chose to publicize,” the commissioner said.

Silver Will Meet Irving Next Monday

The Nets released Irving for the second straight season. Last year, he declined a Covid-19 vaccine, leaving him ineligible for home games. The Nets didn’t want him to be a part-time player but they welcomed him back in December.

Irving shared the since-deleted link last week and defended it following the Nets’ loss to Indiana on Saturday. Irving refused to talk to the media after the team’s two games this week to avoid upsetting supporters. On Thursday, he asked reporters why they weren’t inquiring about Black history in America, stating 300 million of his relatives are buried there.

“Where were you guys when I was a kid learning about the traumatic events of my familial history and what I’m proud to come from and proud to stand here?” Irving asked. “And why when I repeat myself that I’m not going to stand down, it has nothing to do with dismissing any other race or group of people.

“I’m proud of my background and everything we’ve been through and the fact that this has put me against the Jewish community and I’m answering questions about something I didn’t create and shared and I’m telling everyone I’m taking responsibility, then that’s where I sit.”

Irving Was Asked About The Holocaust

Irving criticized the film’s falsehoods. “I don’t deny the Holocaust. False. No way! Not from me. No tweets. I’ve never liked it. The Holocaust meant something to a vast group of people who suffered needlessly.

The Nets announced Irving’s suspension will extend “unless he completes objective rehabilitative steps” After he missed much of last season, the team didn’t extend his contract this summer. Irving opted into the final year of his deal, therefore he may be leaving the team. Steve Nash was fired after the Nets’ 2-6 start.
