PSG vs. Juventus: Paris Saint-Germain defeated Juventus 2-1 on Wednesday night at the Allianz Stadium in the Champions League with a goal and an assist from Kylian Mbappe but they still finished in second place in their group.

Paris Saint-Germain entered the day tied for first place in Group H with Benfica who were playing Maccabi Haifa at the same time but ahead on goal difference.

Mbappe and Nuno Mendes’ goals appeared to put PSG on top of the group, but Benfica’s 6-1 win against Haifa kept them tied for first place with PSG and allowed them to proceed as the group winner thanks to their superior goal differential.

PSG coach Christophe Galtier said after the game, “We’ve beaten Juventus twice and we were quite satisfied until the 92nd minute.” However, to advance far in this competition, you will need to defeat strong opposition. Let’s see who we’re paired with in the round of 16 by waiting for the draw.

Last week when we were up 7-2 against Maccabi we decided to end the game in the 90th minute because we were already comfortable winners. As was the case against Haifa, we allowed far too many goals on set pieces. We could have won our group by two points if only we hadn’t given up that one goal.

Mbappe, true to form in the Champions League opened the scoring with a beautiful strike. After receiving a pass from Lionel Messi the Frenchman faked out his defender dribbled to his right, and unleashed an unstoppable shot from the top of the box that beat Wojciech Szczesny to give PSG the lead.

PSG vs. Juventus: Game Play

Despite being ousted from the round of 16 Juventus pressed the PSG backline in the minutes following Mbappe’s brilliant opening with Manuel Locatelli and Juan Cuadrado both coming close with long-range attempts.

Around the half-hour mark the teams continued trading chances with Mbappe having a hopeful shot from 30 yards out go near and Fabio Miretti missing at Gianluigi Donnarumma’s far post after finding space in the area.

Leonardo Bonucci, a club stalwart scored a merited equalizer for Juventus just before halftime redirecting a low Cuadrado header across the face of the goalmouth and into the back of the net.

PSG’s win over Juventus gives hope, danger signs

After a strong start to the second half from Juventus, PSG’s replacement Mendes scored a well-taken goal off an assist from Mbappe to swing the game in his team’s favor. Mendes came in for Juan Bernat in the 68th minute.

Filip Kostic sent a rocket from the top of the box in the 78th minute and Donnarumma stopped it but the rebound went straight to Locatelli, who buried it but had his goal disallowed for offside.

Thanks to Benfica’s win against Maccabi Haifa Juventus are still in the Europa League and they, Paris Saint-Germain and the Portuguese champions will find out who they will face in the next round in Monday’s draw.

This loss marked the first time in Juventus history that they had been eliminated from the Champions League after losing five of their six group-stage matches.

They had never lost more than five times in a single Champions League season until this one. That season in 2002–03 they lost one game in the first group stage three games in the second and one leg of the semifinals.
