The New York Knicks prevailed 134-131 over the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday night thanks in large part to 27 points from Jalen Brunson who made the game-winning shot in overtime.
Brunson not only scored 13 points, but he also dished out 13 assists and grabbed seven boards. For New York, RJ Barrett scored 22 points and Julius Randle added 17, leading the team to its best start (3-1) in 10 years.
with 21 points, Gordon Hayward was Charlotte’s top scorer. Three players scored 17 points: PJ Washington, Kelly Oubre Jr. and Jalen McDaniels.
Taking a 124-122 lead with 3:14 to go in overtime, Brunson hit a 3-pointer to put the Knicks up to stay.
Brunson stated, “We kept fighting.” We were able to figure out a means to win. We maintained composure and kept making plays down the stretch.
With three seconds left, Barrett converted two free throws after Washington’s long jumper had brought the score to 132-131 and the Hornets had rallied to within one.
Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau said, “When you’re a primary scorer, you want to be able to step to the line and hit those two free throws in that situation.” He fired his gun at them with complete assurance.
Randle’s layup at 2:56 of the third quarter gave the Knicks a 91-79 lead, their largest of the game. With just over two minutes remaining in the game, the Hornets went up by five points 120-115.
It was late in the fourth inning, and we had the lead,” Hayward said. We failed to defend as well as we could have. That’s the sad part. Later in the game, they began to make shots while we were struggling.”
