Shelley was born on 23 August 1949, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Invading and Leland Long was her parents. She enters in Indiana High School Forensic Association and in 1967 she won National Forensic League’s National Championship in Original Oratory. Graduate from South Side High School at Fort Wayne, she went to Northwestern University.
