Netflix shows have dominated the Nielsen ratings for streaming and the two that have stood out the most are both high-fantasy adventures.
The results for the week ending September 25 indicate that House of the Dragon has surpassed The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, which had been the top film up until that point, as reported by Deadline. Both fantasy series is currently in the top five of the ratings, with House of the Dragon taking the top spot.
Shortly after it was revealed that the Ryan Murphy series had achieved the second-highest viewership of any English-language show on Netflix, the true-crime biopic Dahmer took the top spot.

Nielsen reports that Dahmer has been seen by 3.6 billion people and that Cobra Kai, a spinoff of The Karate Kid has been seen by 2.4 billion people. The Rings of Power has 977 million viewers while House of the Dragon has 1 billion.
The Amazon Prime series follows the story of the creation of the three Rings of Power and how they are intertwined with the One Ring, as told in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy and its supplemental materials.
In it, we see Galadriel as she develops from a fierce young fighter into the formidable leader of the original trilogy. In The Rings of Power, we are transported back in time 2,000 years before the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring.
Tolkien penned lengthy works about the history of Middle-earth, covering topics like the doomed land of Numenor, the peaceful land of Eriador and the warring kingdoms of Gondor and Rohan.
The events of The Rings of Power span thousands of years in Tolkien’s work but have been reduced for the show. Both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings feature a number of recurring characters, such as Elrond and the villainous Sauron, as well as a number of new characters who serve as historical echoes of earlier events.
Game of Thrones, based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books, has its own prequel, House of the Dragon, which is HBO’s answer to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The civil war between Daemon Targaryen and his niece Rhaenyra, or The Dance of the Dragons, is chronicled here. Fire & Blood is the source material for this adaptation.
Given that George RR Martin is a well-known lover of J. R. R. Tolkien and even took the “RR” middle initial from Tolkien’s own, it’s ironic that these two programs are vying against each other in the rating war against the onslaught from Netflix products.
Both authors’ names are instantly recognized by fans as they sign up for streaming services to dive into the fantastical worlds they’ve created. The Rings of Power is still performing well in the Nielsen ratings, despite House of the Dragon’s early lead.
Still, Dahmer is emerging as the dominant paradigm.
