The fourth season of “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” created by Robin Thede and starring Thede, has begun filming on HBO.
Thede’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show” was renewed for a fourth season in June after its third season received critical acclaim and earned two Emmys: one for outstanding picture editing for various programming and another for outstanding directing for a variety series (Bridget Stokes). The sketch series has received 13 Emmy nominations over its first three seasons, winning three.
Production has officially begun in Los Angeles, with returning core cast members Thede, Gabrielle Dennis, and Skye Townsend teasing a new sketch (directed by Stokes) set at “Brothaby’s” in an exclusive first-look photograph provided to Variety.
As the sketch show continues to highlight “Black women having relevant and humorous situations in a fantastical universe that subverts traditional expectations,” Season 4 welcomes three new featured players, DaMya Gurley, Tamara Jade, and Angel Laketa Moore, to the fun.

It has been confirmed that Ashley Nicole Black, who has been with the show since Season 1, would not be returning for the upcoming seasons. Black’s recent resume includes “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee,” “The Amber Ruffin Show,” and “Ted Lasso,” for which she won an Emmy earlier this year, and she is next set to star in “Bad Monkey” for Apple TV+.
Her characters Trinity the invisible spy and Ruth, one of the disciples in “The Last Supp-her” and “The Res-erection,” have been featured on the show multiple times.
Thede, in a statement announcing the premiere of the new season, paid tribute to Ashley Nicole Black, an Emmy winner, who worked as a writer and performer on “A Black Lady Sketch Show” for three seasons. “No matter where her life takes her, she will always be a part of our family, and we are cheering her on as she achieves greatness.”

Black’s departure isn’t the first time the sketch show’s ensemble has been revamped. Quinta Brunson left the show after Season 1 due to the production shutdown caused by the COVID-19 epidemic, but the now-Emmy-winning creator and star of “Abbott Elementary” made a guest appearance in Season 3. Season 2 also included a prominent role for Laci Mosley.
Thede continued, praising the new cast members, saying, “Angel, DaMya, and Tamara are the absolute bellwether for the next generation of comedians!” They perform songs and dances and act out comedic scenes. We can’t wait to present the world to them since we know their boundless skills will amaze and excite audiences.
Moore’s portfolio includes roles in “Atypical” and “AJ & The Queen” on Netflix, “Sydney to the Max” on the Disney Channel, and “United States of Al” and “B Positive” on CBS. In addition to “The Bald and the Beautiful,” Moore also hosts the weekly podcasts “Here is the Thing” and “Is This Going to Cause an Argument.”
Her “Slightly Problematic” national tour stopped in 37 cities in 2021. In spite of being a full-time mom to four boys and the wife of a self-described “quick-witted husband,” Angel’s “That Chick Angel” account has amassed over 800,000 followers across several platforms due to the success of her humorous and relatable posts.
Pittsburgh CAPA alumnus and Alumni Theater Company kid Gurley grew up acting in shows there (Creative and Performing Arts). She discovered her passion for comedy as an acting major at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where she went on to win the national August Wilson Monologue Competition.

She then honed her skills to become a viral sensation on TikTok. For Gurley, becoming a part of “A Black Lady Sketch Show” is a “full-circle” moment because she was so inspired by “ABLSS” and “Awkward Black Girl” (produced by “ABLSS” executive producer Issa Rae).
Jade is an accomplished singer, actor, composer, and producer who has shared the stage alongside such notable artists as Madonna, Lizzo, Jon Batiste, Emily King, Usher, Yung Gravy, Tori Kelly, PJ Morton and John Legend (her coach on Season 19 of NBC’s “The Voice”).
Jade is no stranger to endorsement deals, having worked with the likes of Nike, Toyota, Amazon Prime, K8Hair and Hanes, and she has recently shifted her focus to acting and presenting in cinema and television.
Thede produces “A Black Lady Sketch Show” through her company, For Better or Words, Inc.; Rae produces it for Hooray; Dave Becky and Jonathan Berry produce it for 3 Arts Entertainment and Tony Hernandez and Brooke Posch produce it for Jax Media.
The entire run of “A Black Lady Sketch Show” on HBO Max is now complete through all three seasons.
