The owner of Balthazar, a legendary restaurant frequented by New York’s elite, has spoken out, calling comedian James Corden a “little Cretin of a guy” and “the most aggressive customer” in the restaurant’s history, and temporarily banning him from the establishment.
Balthazar and other prominent NYC restaurant owner Keith McNally claimed in an Instagram post on Monday that he does not frequently “86” a customer (meaning ban or refuse service to someone) but that Corden had deserved it after two incidences when he abused workers.
McNally claims that in June, after finishing his main meal, Corden spotted a hair in his dish and asked for a round of drinks “this second” and that his prior beverages be comped because of it. McNally claims that Corden was “very rude” to the manager.

“You can’t do your job! You can’t do your job!” Corden said to the server, according to McNally, citing a manager’s report from the incident. “Maybe I should go into the kitchen and cook the omelet myself!” When Corden erupted at the server, free glasses of champagne were brought over “to smooth things out.” The episode left the server “very shaken.”
According to McNally, Corden and his wife visited the restaurant for brunch earlier this month, and while they were eating, Corden complained to the waitress that his wife’s egg yolk omelet had “a little bit of egg white” in it. Remaking the dish and sending it out with home fries instead of a salad was supposedly the final straw for Corden.
In spite of several attempts, we have not heard back from a Corden representative. On Monday night, we called Balthazar and spoke to a manager, but he or she declined to comment.
McNally added that “a few years back” Corden had acted similarly at another of his restaurants, Cafe Luxembourg.
By Monday night McNally had announced that he was lifting the ban on Corden after receiving an apology call from the comedian. McNally stated that he “apologized profusely.”
McNally firmly held, “I passionately believe in second chances.” His second point was that “anyone generous enough to apologize” to him and his colleagues “doesn’t deserve to be blacklisted from anywhere.”
