The pennant race in the National and American Leagues is heating up now that October has arrived. The 2022 MLB Playoffs are about to begin and the defending champion Atlanta Braves are ready to defend their title.
The playoffs this year will be different from those in years past. There will be 12 teams competing in the playoffs for the first time instead of the usual 10. Four best-of-3 Wild Card Series games will be played instead of the usual single-elimination Wild Card Games, and these will be followed by a best-of-5 Division Series.
The Matchups
AL Wild Card Series (Starts October 7)
In the American League, the Astros (1) and the Yankees (2) both get off with no games to play. The higher seed will host all three games of the Wild Card Series which is played in a best-of-three format.
- Rays (6) at Guardians (3)
- Mariners (5) at Blue Jays (4)
The ALDS will begin on October 11 with the winners facing off against the Astros and Yankees in the best-of-5 series (Mariners/Blue Jays at Astros and Rays/Guardians at Yankees).
NL Wild Card Series (Starts October 7)
The National League Wild Card Series is a best-of-three with the higher seed hosting games one and two. The top two seeds, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves both receive byes.
- Philadelphia Phillies (6) vs. St. Louis Cardinals (3)
- San Diego Padres (5) vs. New York (4)
In the best-of-five NL Division Series which begins on October 11 and features the Braves and Dodgers, the winners of the Padres/Mets and Phillies/Cardinals series will advance to face the Dodgers and Braves. Learn below how you can catch every pitch of the 2022 MLB Postseason and World Series.
