While Alicent finds herself in a position of power after King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) marries her after the death of his wife, Rhaenyra is a teenager dealing with the growing responsibilities of being a princess.
To set up the infamous civil conflict known as “the Dance of Dragons,” the anime skips ahead ten years between episodes five and six.
In this timeline, Rhaenyra and Alicent are both parents, and their offspring are portrayed by Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke. The stars aren’t taking this lightly, especially because D’Arcy has acknowledged that they have some large shoes to fill heading into the second half of the season.
Though creator Ryan Condal told that fans might not have seen the last of Alcock and Carey, that doesn’t mean they won’t be back. “Let’s be honest, I just don’t have a clue. He said, “That’s not a thing that we’re doing right now. [They] are not a part of the story that we’re telling yet.”
Condal clarified that the writers are taking a unique approach to the prequel series. He explained that “Game of Thrones” was not a flashback show, and that “House of the Dragon” can afford to be “a little bit more ornate.”
The showrunner continued by saying that plans for Season 2 and beyond aren’t set in stone, leaving the door open for Alcock and Carey to return. Condal has stated, “There are things that we haven’t resolved out, I’m not closing the door on anything.”
Rhaenyra marries Laenor Velaryon (Theo Nate) at the end of the fifth episode, and she has several offspring during the intervening decade, so there is plenty of potentials for Alcock to return and recount further chapters in the history of House Targaryen.
However, showrunner Miguel Sapochnik previously told The Hollywood Reporter that the story as a whole would be handled in a particular way in order for viewers to comprehend the escalating tension.
It was Sapochnik who made the following remark “This is a story about a conflict that spans multiple generations. By the time the first blade is drawn, you’ll have a firm grasp on who’s who, where they stand, and why they’re there. Rather than being explained in exposition, all the background information is provided for you in the text.”
The HBO series “House of the Dragon” airs every Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET.
