In the first season of House of the Dragon, Princess Rhaenyra’s wedding is approaching and many of you out there are speculating who she will marry.
Here’s what George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood book reveals about the subject. The life of princess Rhaenyra took a turn when King Viserys I Targaryen announced her as the official successor of the Iron Throne after the demise of her mom and newly born brother.
With marriage being an integral part of the Westeros political hierarchy necessary for royals, audiences have already witnessed Viserys marrying Alicent and eventually giving a male successor in Aegon II. However, Rhaenyra’s marriage becomes important in the third episode of House of the Dragon.
Rhaenyra’s courting, a process in which she isn’t actually willing in, particularly because of the arranged parts of the relationship, major age difference, as well as the involved power plays. Season 1, Episode 3 of House of the Dragon, has several possible admirers for Rhaenyra.
With Viserys being busy snubbing offers from around Westeros, he finds Jason Lannister suitable for his daughter, despite her not agreeing. The other recommendations also range from Laenor Velaryon to Rhaenyra’s 2-year-old half-brother (since the Targaryens and Game of Thrones don’t mind incest).
First Husband of Rhaenyra Targaryen
Who Rhaenyra ties the knot with in House of the Dragon is not a secret at all because of George R.R. Martin’s books. Corlys Velaryon and Rhaenys Targaryen’s oldest son, dragonrider Laenor Velaryon is Rhaenyra’s first husband.
The two exchanged wedding vows in 114 AC when Rhaenyra is 17 years old following Viserys spooks to draw off her status of successor to the Iron Throne if she doesn’t get married.
Her wedding also fortified Corlys and House Velaryon’s vow towards the Targaryen family. Following Rhaenyra’s marriage with Laenor, they welcome three children together whilst she reigns Dragonstone. Laenor then passed away in 120 AC prior to the Dance of the Dragon.
Rhaenyra Targaryen’s Second Husband
After the demise of Laenor, Rhaenyra Targaryen soon found her second husband and married Daemon Targaryen, her uncle. Though this sounds strange, the show’s first episode indicated their close bond. While Daemon’s assertion to the Iron Throne was given up by King Viserys in Rhaenyra’s favor led to their separation, it would not be long before when they rekindled their relationship.
The book also disclosed that Rhaenyra secretly ties the knot with Daemon soon after Laenor’s demise which created many controversies in Dragonstone. This also sparked rumors of their earlier romantic involvement.
The reason behind Rhaenyra and Daemon’s marriage is arguably linked with her earlier experience with Laenor. Reportedly, Laenor had interest in men rather than his spouse. Rhaenyra and Daemon know each other well and we have seen their connection in House of Dragon several times.
Though the purpose of Daemon marrying Rhaenyra may be to be closer to ruling himself, it has been suggested in the book that he was supportive of her battle to restore her heir status to the Iron Throne.
